About this file
This document is an informational brochure produced by Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling (SWR) in Oregon, focused on encouraging local businesses to donate surplus food. The brochure outlines a food donation program that aims to reduce food waste while supporting community members experiencing food insecurity. The materials explain the donation process in four steps: contacting a Green Business Advisor, preparing food for donation, having a food pantry pick up the items, and ultimately delivering the donated food to community members in need.
The brochure highlights several benefits for businesses participating in the food donation program, including supporting the local community, protecting the environment, potentially saving money on garbage collection costs, and qualifying for tax deductions. It emphasizes that federal and state Good Samaritan laws protect businesses from liability when donating safely handled food. The document notes that 83 million tons of food are wasted annually in the United States, while one in five people in Oregon face food insecurity, positioning the program as a solution to address both waste reduction and community nutrition challenges. Contact information is provided for Washington County Green Business Advisors, including a phone number, email, and website for businesses interested in participating.
