3.2 TOPSOIL AND ROCK SURFACING:
A. Excavate topsoil and rock surfacing from construction areas. Topsoil shall be stockpiled for use in finishing operations. Rock surfacing shall be stockpiled for reuse in the base course of the aggregate driving surface.
B. In general, topsoil shall be removed to a depth of six inches. The depth of topsoil may vary throughout the project. Topsoil shall be spread evenly to a depth of at least 6-inches over all cut and fill areas not covered by structures, gravel surfacing, or riprap.
3.3 OPEN EXCAVATIONS AND STOCKPILES:
A. Control excavation to prevent water from running in. Do not obstruct surface drainage or existing waterways with stockpiles.
3.4 DEWATERING:
A. Provide and maintain devices at all times during construction to remove and dispose of all water from any source from all excavations. Use methods which will ensure dry excavations and preserve the final lines and grades of the excavation. Methods used may include well points, sump pumps, suitable rock or gravel drains, temporary pipelines, or other acceptable means.
B. Commence dewatering when water is first encountered and continue until construction is complete.
Dewater so that floor or footing concrete will not be placed in water. Do not allow water to rise against walls or above footings and slabs.
3.5 EXCAVATION AND TRENCHING:
A. General: Perform all material conditioning and excavations required. Excavation includes the removal and selected disposal of all excess or unsuitable materials of whatever nature.
B. Stockpile satisfactory excavated materials until required for fill or backfill. Stockpile in area(s) on-site where it will not interfere with drainage, construction, or utility operations. Obtain composite sample for laboratory testing.
C. Remove from site and legally dispose of all excavated materials unsatisfactory for use as fill or backfill.
D. Placement of Materials: Following laboratory testing, excavated material which meets required specifications may be used in embankments or backfill when approved and accepted.
E. Disposal of unsuitable and excess material. Unsuitable materials are defined as large rocks, excessive organic materials, and excess excavation material. See Articles 3.17 and 3.18 for disposal of unsuitable and excess material.
3.6 PIPE CLEARANCE IN ROCK:
A. Ledge rock, shale, boulders and large stones shall be removed to provide a minimum of 6 inches below the pipe and a minimum 6 inches at either side.
B. These minimum clearance requirements are not minimum average but are minimum clear distances, which will be permitted between the pipe being laid and any projection or point of such rock, shale, stone, or boulder.
C. All material so removed shall be replaced with suitable materials required for trench backfill.
3.7 REPLACEMENT OF UNSTABLE PIPE FOUNDATIONS:
A. In locations where an otherwise stable soil becomes soft or mucky in the bottom of the trench as a result of construction operations and the presence of the ground or surface water and is in such condition that the trench bottom cannot be properly shaped and graded and also where it is difficult and impractical to obtain a uniform bearing for the pipe at all points because of the hardness of the soil, such unsuitable material shall be removed to a depth of not less than 4-inches below the elevation of the pipe subgrade over the entire width of the trench and replaced with suitable, finely divided material of acceptable quality and sufficiently damp for proper compaction.
3.8 REMOVAL OF WATER:
A. The Contractor shall provide and maintain proper and adequate dewatering equipment for the removal and disposal of all surface water, groundwater, and water from other sources entering excavations for the structure, trenches, or other parts of the work.
3.9 BRACING AND SHEETING:
