About this file
This is a reference document from the State of Texas providing guidance on the NIGP Commodity/Services Code system used for classifying state procurements and matching vendors with procurement opportunities. The document explains that the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing developed the NIGP code system, which is utilized by the Statewide Procurement Division (SPD) and Texas Department of Information Resources to classify commodities, products, and services. The NIGP organizational structure designates Class Codes 001 to 899 for commodities and products, while codes 900 to 999 classify services. The document provides examples of commodity codes, such as 025-43 for high-pressure compressors and 204-53 for desktop microcomputers, and service codes, including 918-21 for business consulting and 968-66 for right-of-way services. Respondents are encouraged to use the class-item numbering and descriptions found in the NIGP commodity book to properly code products or services and to familiarize themselves with the format and contents as they apply to the Centralized Master Bidders List search and vendor registration.
The Centralized Master Bidders List (CMBL) is a master database maintained by Texas purchasing entities to develop mailing lists for vendors to receive bids based on the specific products or services they are capable of providing to the State of Texas. Vendors can access the NIGP commodity code search through https://mycpa.cpa.state.tx.us/commbook/indexSearch and the CMBL search through https://mycpa.cpa.state.tx.us/tpasscmblsearch/tpasscmblsearch.do. Additional search tips for the CMBL and HUB Directory are available at https://comptroller.texas.gov/purchasing/vendor/registration/search-tips.php.
