AMC-635-2
OCTOBER 1989
NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION (NOAA)
ATLANTIC MARINE CENTER
STANDARD SPECIFICATION AMC-635-2
THERMAL INSULATION FOR COMPARTMENTS
1. SCOPE. This specification contains the general requirements for renewing and installing thermal insulation on shell plating, bulkheads, overheads, and other structure in compartments of NOAA ships.
2. REFERENCES.
a. NOAA Standard Specification AMC-000-1 (latest revision), General Requirements for Ship Repair Contract Work on NOAA Ships"
3. REQUIREMENTS.
3.1 Whenever removal or renewal of existing insulation is
necessary to accomplish the required work, the contractor shall remove and properly dispose of all existing insulation. If the existing insulation contains asbestos materials, comply with Section 4.11.7 of reference 2.a. All suspect materials shall be considered to contain asbestos unless proven to be otherwise.
The contractor may have samples analyzed by a qualified laboratory to prove or disprove the presence of asbestos.
3.2 Materials.
3.2.1 Fibrous glass faced thermal insulation board, complying with MIL-I-742, Type I, shall be used.
3.2.2 Fibrous glass tape shall comply with MIL-C-20079, Type II, Class 1.
3.2.3 Fibrous glass insulation felt shall comply with MIL-I-
22023, Type I, Class 6.
3.2.4 Epoxy adhesive shall comply with MIL-A-24456.
3.2.5 Latex adhesive shall comply with MIL-A-3316, Class 1, Grade A.
3.2.6 Vapor barrier coating compound shall comply with MIL-C- 19993.
3.3 Installation.
3.3.1 Secure insulation board to the specified surfaces using 3/16-inch diameter studs and press-fit metal caps. Aluminum studs shall be used if the specified surface is aluminum and cadmium-plated steel studs shall be used on steel surfaces.
3.3.2 In areas accessible for a stud gun, weld studs shall be used. In areas that are inaccessible for a stud gun, studs welded to a perforated pad may be bonded to ship's structure using epoxy adhesive. A maximum of 25-percent of the total number of studs required to secure insulation on each plane area bounded by stiffeners or bulkheads may be attached using adhesive.
3.3.3 Studs shall be spaced approximately 12 inches (maximum of 14 inches) apart on centers. Studs at the edges of each piece of insulation board shall be placed not more than 4 inches from the edge at maximum intervals of 12 inches. Sufficient studs must be used to hold the insulation board firmly and evenly against the surface.
3.3.4 Insulation on vertical surfaces shall extend from 6 inches above the deck to the overhead. Do not apply insulation to the vertical surface within 6 inchess of the deck. Along the lower edge of the insulation, install a metal buffer plate tack-welded to the surface and extending out from surface a distance equal to the insulation thickness.
3.3.5 Insulation board shall be cut and neatly fitted around
surface protrusions.
3.3.6 Install insulation on beams, frames, and stiffeners as
shown on attached Appendix A.
3.3.7 Cover all seams, joints, and edges of thermal insulation with fibrous glass tape using latex adhesive.
3.3.8 To all insulation installed in laundries, sculleries, galleys, drying rooms, and to all insulation installed on the warm side of refrigerated stores spaces, apply a vapor barrier consisting of three alternate brush coatings of white, orange, and white vapor barrier coating compound.
