2.1 Introduction

This section includes detailed descriptions of the centerboard operator’s controls as outlined by the table of contents on page 2-1. See

Section 3, Operation, for the general operating instructions for the centerboard positioning equipment.

2.2 Centerboard Description

The AmClyde model CB–32 centerboard, serial number SO5297 (see figures 2–1 and 2–2), consists of the trunk, located within the hull of the vessel, the centerboard, and equipment used for vertically positioning the centerboard within the trunk.

A rack-and-pinion arrangement moves the centerboard. A hydraulic motor drives the pinion through a planetary gearbox with internal brake

(spring engaged/hydraulically released).

A spud actuated by a hydraulic cylinder locks the centerboard in any of four positions selectable on the centerboard control panels.

Wear pads provide stability when the center-board is in position. Eight of the wear pads face outward to contact the guide rails that are attached to the trunk. Four of the outward-facing wear pads are actuated by a pair of hydraulic cylinders to push against the trunk guide rails and provide the necessary horizontal force.

Hydraulic power is provided by the power plant

(see paragraph 2.2.1).

2.2.1 Hydraulic Power Plant

NOTICE

• See also Volume 2 Parts Manual, Section 3, drawing 1570279, Hydraulic

Schematic.

The hydraulic power plant (see figure 2–3) generates hydraulic power to actuate the

• centerboard drive motor

• gearbox brake

(spring engaged/hydraulically released)

• wear pad cylinders

• spud cylinder

A fixed-displacement gear pump, driven by an electric motor, supplies flow that drives the fixed-displacement hydraulic motor on the centerboard. Rate and direction of hydraulic flow are controlled by solenoid-operated hydraulic valves.

2.2.1.1 Pumping Circuit

The pump draws hydraulic fluid from the reser-voir through a strainer. Flow from the pump is sent through a filter that is protected from overpressurization by a bypass valve. An indi-cator on the filter shows when the element needs to be replaced.

Three relief valves limit pressure in the system.

Overflow from the pump relief valve is sent through the hydraulic return filter before reach-ing the reservoir.

Flow rate is controlled by solenoids SV-13 and

SV-17, which can shift the three-position sole-noid valve to select between fast, medium, and slow equipment speeds:

• fast speed: 18 gal/min flow rate (both solenoids de-energized)

• medium speed: 3 gal/min (SV-17 energized)

• slow speed: 1 gal/min (SV-13 energized)

The wear pad cylinders and spud cylinder need to exert less force when operating in the alumi-num section of the trunk than when operating in the steel section, to avoid damaging the trunk.

The control system accomplishes this using

• solenoid valve SV-14 to enable or disable the 200 psi wear pad cylinder pressure-reducing valve and to enable or disable the

750 psi spud cylinder pressure-reducing valve

• solenoid valve SV-15 to enable or solenoid valve SV-16 to disable the wear pad low pressure accumulator

2.2.1.2 Hydraulic Oil Reservoir

The hydraulic oil reservoir (see figure 2–3) has:

• an oil level sight gauge

• an oil level switch

• “caution” and “shutdown” temperature switches

• a filler breather

The oil level switch controls the LOW

HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL indicator light (see paragraph 2.4.3) on the local control panel.

The high temperature switch controls the HIGH

HYDRAULIC OIL TEMPERATURE indicator lights (see paragraph 2.4.2) on the local control panel and shutdown of the equipment at the

“shutdown” hydraulic oil temperature.

WARNING

• Do not operate the equipment with a high hydraulic oil level, low hydraulic oil level, or high hydraulic oil temperature.

2.2.1.3 Hydraulic Oil Return Filter

Return hydraulic oil passes through the return filter. The return filter has a replaceable element and is protected from overpressurization by a bypass valve. An indicator for the filter shows when the element is bypassing unfiltered hydraulic oil, and needs to be replaced.

To immediately stop all equipment functions, fully push the knob of an EMERGENCY STOP push/pull switch (see table 2–1). See Emer-gency Stop Procedure, paragraph 3.4. The following equipment stops and the gearbox brake engages:

• gearbox hydraulic drive motor

• wear pad cylinders

• spud cylinder

• power plant electric motor

The wear pad cylinders and spud cylinder remain in the position they were in when the

EMERGENCY STOP switch was pushed, but leakdown of the corresponding hydraulic circuits can cause the cylinders to drift. All the solenoids for controlling valves in the hydraulic system are de-energized.

The trunk access door interlock switch(es)

(supplied by others), active only in the “auto” mode of operation, function similarly to the

EMERGENCY STOP switches. When the door

(interlock switch) is opened during “auto” mode, the control system response is the same as when an EMERGENCY STOP switch is pushed. The door interlock switch(es) are bypassed in the “manual” mode of operation.

2.4.2 HIGH HYDRAULIC OIL

TEMPERATURE Indicator Lights

Do not operate the equipment with a hydraulic oil temperature that is too high. If the hydraulic oil temperature is too high (150°F or more), the yellow HIGH HYDRAULIC OIL TEMPERATURE

WARNING indicator light (figure 2–4, item 8) on the local control panel illuminates. If the hydrau-lic oil temperature is 195°F or higher, the red

HIGH HYDRAULIC OIL TEMPERATURE

SHUTDOWN indicator light (item 12) on the local control panel illuminates and the equip-ment is shut down automatically in the same manner as an emergency stop (see paragraph

3.4). The hydraulic power plant cannot be re-started until the hydraulic oil has cooled.

CAUTION

• Do not operate the equipment with a

HIGH HYDRAULIC OIL TEMPERATURE

indicator light illuminated. Doing so can reduce the life of hydraulic equipment parts.

2.4.3 Hydraulic Oil Level Sight Gauge

and LOW HYDRAULIC OIL

LEVEL Indicator Light

The sight gauge (see figure 2–3) on the side of the hydraulic oil reservoir of the power plant shows the level of the hydraulic oil in the reser-voir (see Checking Hydraulic Oil Level, para-graph 4.5.6).

Do not operate the equipment with a hydraulic oil level that is too high or too low. If the hydrau-lic oil level is too low, the yellow LOW

HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL indicator light (figure

2–4, item 15) on the local control panel illumi-nates.

CAUTION

• Do not operate the equipment with the

LOW HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL indicator light illuminated.

TEST Push Button

The ALARM ACKNOWLEDGE red illuminated push button (see table 2–2) illuminates to show a fault or emergency stop condition (hydraulic power plant electric motor fault, sensor fault, emergency stop, high hydraulic oil temperature shutdown). Pushing the illuminated ALARM

ACKNOWLEDGE push button clears the fault condition if it is still not active, extinguishing the indicator light.

Push the LAMP TEST push button (see table

2–2) on the active control panel to test the indi-cator lights on the control panel and on the acoustic lab CENTERBOARD POSITION indi-cator panel. The indicator lights illuminate and then return to their pre-test condition when the

LAMP TEST push button is released.

NOTICE

• The CENTERBOARD CONTROL

SET-UP/STOP/RUN or STOP/RUN switch must be in the SET-UP or RUN position for the LAMP TEST push button on the corresponding control panel to function. Return the switch to the STOP position when finished testing the indicator lights.

2.4.5 PANEL LIGHT DIMMER Control

The PANEL LIGHT DIMMER control (figure

2–5, item 1) on the bridge control panel controls the brightness of the indicator lights on the bridge control panel for the centerboard. The indicator lights can be turned on or off by push-ing the knob of the dimmer control.

2.5 Power Plant Control Devices

The hydraulic power plant (see figure 2–1) has a motor starter panel MS0202 (supplied by others) located near it, from which the hydraulic power plant can be manually started and stopped. The LOCAL/REMOTE switch on the motor starter panel enables the manual START and STOP push buttons on the motor starter panel (LOCAL position). In the LOCAL position, the START and STOP push buttons control the electric motor for the pump of the hydraulic power plant. In the REMOTE position, the manual START push button is disabled and the programmable logic controller (PLC) of the centerboard control system has control of the power plant electric motor. The STOP push button functions in both the LOCAL and

REMOTE positions.

2.6.1 CONTROL MODE BRIDGE/

LOCAL Switch and Indicator

Lights

The CONTROL MODE BRIDGE/LOCAL switch

(figure 2–5, item 3) on the bridge control panel selects whether the equipment is controlled from the bridge control panel or the local control panel.

The indicator lights on either control panel continue to function for monitoring purposes even if the other control panel is the active control panel.

The yellow CONTROL MODE indicator lights

(see table 2–3) on the local control panel illumi-nate to indicate the active control panel.

2.6.2 AUTO/MANUAL Switch

WARNING

• There are safety precautions in the software of the programmable logic controller (PLC) for the “auto” mode of operation that do not function in the

“manual” mode of operation.

The AUTO/MANUAL switch (figure 2–4, item 11) on the local control panel controls whether the equipment operates in the “auto” or

“manual” mode. Use the “auto” mode for normal operation. Use the “manual” mode if necessary for maintenance, inspection, or in case of failure of the programmable logic controller (PLC).

In the AUTO position, the PLC of the control system sequences the movements of the equip-ment automatically. Moving the centerboard to a new position is done using the POSITION

SELECT push buttons (see paragraph 2.6.5).

In the MANUAL position, the operator must manually sequence the movement of the equip-ment with the manual mode controls (see para-graph 2.6.8) to control the lowering, raising, and parking of the centerboard.

CAUTION

• Because the manual mode controls are hard-wired (the controls do not operate through the PLC), putting the AUTO/

MANUAL switch in the MANUAL position will enable the manual mode controls even when the local control panel is not the active control panel.

2.6.3 CENTERBOARD CONTROL

SET-UP/STOP/RUN Switch

Use the CENTERBOARD CONTROL SET-UP/

STOP/RUN switch (figure 2–4, item 10) on the local control panel to

• begin or end “auto” mode operation (RUN and STOP positions)

• begin or end “manual” mode operation

• establish the centerboard position setpoints

(SET-UP position)

In the RUN position, the indicator lights are operational. In the “auto” mode of operation, the centerboard is ready to accept a positioning command. When the centerboard is not moving, the hydraulic power plant automatically cycles when necessary to maintain wear pad pressure and to “bump” the spud cylinder extend circuit (to ensure spud engagement).

For “manual” mode operation, the RUN (or

SETUP) position is required because it enables the PAD PRESSURE LOW/HIGH switch (see paragraph 2.6.8.2). (Otherwise the correspond-ing solenoids for the low pressure accumulator

(SV-15 and SV-16) and for the low pressure control valve (SV-14) would be de-energized.)

In the STOP position, the indicator lights are extinguished and, when in the “auto” mode of operation,

• the centerboard cannot be operated

• the hydraulic power plant is stopped (does not automatically cycle)

In the “manual” mode of operation, the STOP position disables the PAD PRESSURE LOW/

HIGH switch and de-energizes the correspond-ing solenoids (SV-15, SV-16, and SV-14).

The SET-UP position is for storing in the program of the programmable logic controller

(PLC) the exact elevation of the centerboard position setpoints, for example during initial installation of the centerboard. The elevation of any of the four designated centerboard posi-tions (MAINTENANCE, RETRACTED, INTERMEDIATE, and LOWERED) can be stored in the PLC program using the procedure in paragraph 4.8.

2.6.4 STOP/RUN Switch

The STOP/RUN switch (figure 2–5, item 4) on the bridge control panel functions in the same way as the CENTERBOARD CONTROL

SET-UP/STOP/RUN switch (see paragraph

2.6.3) on the local control panel, except that there is no SET-UP position.

2-14 Operation and Maintenance Manual

2.6.5 Centerboard POSITION SELECT

Push Buttons and Indicator

Lights

Push a POSITION SELECT push button (see table 2–5) on the active control panel to select a different position for the centerboard in the

“auto” mode of operation. When pushed,

• the push button flashes green to indicate the selection

• the control system sequences the move-ments of the centerboard positioning equip-ment to move the centerboard to the new position

When the centerboard is parked in the new position, the push button illuminates steady green.

The illumination of the CENTERBOARD

POSITION indicator lights (see table 2–4) on the acoustic lab CENTERBOARD POSITION indicator panel duplicates the illumination of the

POSITION SELECT push buttons on the active control panel.

2.6.6 SPUD Indicator Lights

The red SPUD UNLOCKED indicator light

(figure 2–4, item 7) on the local control panel illuminates when the spud is all the way unlocked (“out”).

The green SPUD LOCKED indicator light

(figure 2–4, item 6) on the local control panel illuminates when the spud is all the way locked

(“in”).

2.6.7 PADS Indicator Lights

The red PADS RELEASED indicator light (figure

2–4, item 5) illuminates when the wear pads are all the way released from the trunk guide rails.

The green PADS ENGAGED indicator light

(figure 2–4, item 16) illuminates when the wear pads are all the way engaged against the trunk guide rails.

2.6.8 Manual Mode Controls

CAUTION

• The manual mode controls are intended for use in case of failure of the programmable logic controller

(PLC) or when necessary for maintenance or inspection. Use “auto” mode for normal operation.

NOTICE

• The trunk door interlock switch(es) are bypassed in the “manual” mode of operation (see paragraph 2.4.1).

2.6.8.1

SPUD CONTROL UNLOCK/

LOCK Switch

CAUTION

• In the “manual” mode of operation, do not LOCK the spud (do not engage the spud) if the PAD PRESSURE LOW/

HIGH switch is in the HIGH position and the spud is within the aluminum section of the trunk (“01 Level” or higher). Doing so can damage the trunk. When engaging the spud at the

MAINTENANCE position of the centerboard, use PAD PRESSURE

LOW to reduce the spud insertion force.

The SPUD CONTROL UNLOCK/LOCK switch

(figure 2–4, item 4) controls the spud. Turn and hold the switch

• in the UNLOCK position to move the spud to the unlocked position (“out”)

• in the LOCK position to move the spud to the locked position (“in”)

Return the switch to its center position to stop the spud motion. The switch is a three-position selector switch that, when released, returns to its center position.

2.6.8.2

PAD PRESSURE LOW/HIGH

Switch

The PAD PRESSURE LOW/HIGH switch

(figure 2–4, item 21) controls the pressure exerted by the wear pads against the trunk, and the pressure exerted by the spud cylinder. Turn the switch to the needed position to select high or low pressure in the wear pad and spud circuits.

LOW pressure is necessary when the wear pads are pushing against the aluminum section of the trunk (MAINTENANCE position) (see figure 2–1). HIGH pressure is necessary when the wear pads are pushing against the steel section of the trunk (RETRACTED, INTERMEDIATE, and LOWERED positions).

LOW pressure is also necessary when engag-ing the spud at the MAINTENANCE position of the centerboard. When HIGH pad pressure is selected, do not permit the spud to contact the aluminum section of the trunk (“01 Level” or higher)—damage to the trunk can result.

NOTICE

• The PAD PRESSURE LOW/HIGH switch has no effect unless the CENTERBOARD

CONTROL SET-UP/STOP/RUN switch is in the SET-UP or RUN position.

• The aluminum section of the trunk is at the “01 Level” and higher. The steel section is below the “01 Level.”

2-16 Operation and Maintenance Manual

2.6.8.3 PADS CONTROL RELEASE/

ENGAGE Switch

WARNING

• In the “manual” mode of operation, wear pad pressure against the trunk must be manually controlled using the

PAD PRESSURE LOW/HIGH switch.

Otherwise, engaging the pads can damage the trunk if the centerboard is in the aluminum section, or the wear pads might be ineffective when in the steel section.

The PADS CONTROL RELEASE/ENGAGE switch (figure 2–4, item 3) controls the wear pads. Turn and hold the switch

• in the RELEASE position to release the wear pads from the trunk

• in the ENGAGE position to move the pads against the trunk

Return the switch to its center position to stop the wear pad motion. The switch is a three-position selector switch that, when released, returns to its center position.

CAUTION

• Engaging the wear pads should only be done at any of the four parking positions (MAINTENANCE, RETRACTED, INTERMEDIATE, or

LOWERED).

When LOW pad pressure is selected, the control system will not try to engage the wear pads in response to the PADS CONTROL

RELEASE/ENGAGE switch unless solenoid valve SV-14 is open to activate (vent) the

200-psi pressure reducing valve in the wear pad hydraulic circuit (the control system checks that pressure switch PS6 is 1000 psi or less and, if not, disables the pads ENGAGE func-tion).

2.6.8.4

CENTERBOARD SPEED

SLOW/MEDIUM/FAST Switch

The CENTERBOARD SPEED SLOW/MEDIUM/

FAST switch (figure 2–4, item 22) controls the movement speed of the centerboard. Turn the switch to the desired position to select slow, medium, or fast speed. Doing so selects between the following flow rates: 1 gal/min

(slow), 3 gal/min (medium), or 18 gal/min (fast).

NOTICE

• The purpose of the MEDIUM speed position is to provide enough hydraulic flow when engaging the spud with the centerboard at the

MAINTENANCE position.

2.6.8.5

CENTERBOARD LOWER/

RAISE Switch

WARNING

• There are no travel limits when in the

“manual” mode of operation. The operator must make sure that the centerboard is not raised or lowered beyond the end of the rack. Equipment damage resulting in death or injury can occur if the centerboard is raised or lowered too far.

CAUTION

• In the “manual” mode of operation, the centerboard does not automatically stop when it reaches the correct position for spud engagement.

The CENTERBOARD LOWER/RAISE switch

(figure 2–4, item 2) controls vertical movement of the centerboard. Turn and hold the switch in the desired position to lower or raise the center-board. Return the switch to its center position to stop the centerboard motion. The switch is a three-position selector switch that, when released, returns to its center position.

The control system will not try to lower or raise the centerboard in response to the

CENTERBOARD LOWER/RAISE switch if the spud is not all the way “out” (unlocked).

3.1 Introduction

The following paragraphs describe the general operating instructions for the centerboard posi-tioning equipment as outlined by the table of contents on page 3-1.

3.2 Pre-Start Procedure

Do the following at the beginning of each work-day, before starting the centerboard positioning equipment.

The following inspections are considered mandatory by AmClyde. They make sure the equipment is in a safe operating condition.

Other inspections can be required by local regulations and must also be made.

1. Check the preventive maintenance records to make sure the scheduled lubrication (see paragraph 4.2) and inspections and mainte-nance (see paragraph 4.3) have been done at the correct intervals.

2. Check that electric power is available to the power plant motor starter panel MS0202

(supplied by others) near the hydraulic power plant and to the local control panel.

The circuit breakers (CB0235, CB0238, and

CB0240) inside the local control panel must be closed.

3.3 Startup Procedure

Do the following to start up the centerboard positioning equipment. This procedure assumes that the system was configured for standby operation using the procedure in paragraph 3.6, Standby Operation. If the equipment was completely shut down, use instead the proce-dure in paragraph 3.8.1, Startup after Mainte-nance Shutdown.

1. Complete the pre-start procedure (see paragraph 3.2).

NOTICE

• Do steps 2 and 3 at the power plant motor starter panel MS0202 (supplied by others), near the hydraulic power plant.

2. Check that the main circuit breaker of the power plant motor starter panel MS0202 is closed.

3. Check that the LOCAL/REMOTE switch (see paragraph 2.5) is in the REMOTE position.

4. Check that the two shutoff valves for reliev-ing hydraulic pressure from the accumula-tors of the hydraulic power plant are closed

(see figure 3–1). Check that the shutoff valve for isolating the high pressure accu-mulator is open.

WARNING

• If an EMERGENCY STOP switch was pushed, determine the reason the switch was pushed before continuing.

If the switch was pushed unintentionally, continue with step 5. If the switch was pushed because of an emergency condition, check to make sure this condition has been corrected before continuing with step 5.

5. Check that the controls listed in table 3–1 are in the positions indicated.

6. Check that all safety guards are in place.

7. Check that all personnel, tools, and other loose items are away from the centerboard equipment.

NOTICE

• Do step 8 at the active control panel.

8. Push the LAMP TEST push button

(figure 2–4, item 9 or figure 2–5, item 2) to test the indicator lights on the active control panel. All the indicator lights must illumi-nate, along with the indicator lights on the acoustic lab CENTERBOARD POSITION indicator panel (see figure 2–6).

CAUTION

• Do not operate the equipment with a failed indicator light. If control is transferred to the other control panel, test the indicator lights of that panel before operating the equipment.
