About this file
This document is a Sole Source Determination (SSD) form submitted by the Mississippi Forestry Commission to the Office of Purchasing, Travel and Fleet Management. The agency seeks to procure a drone from Drone Amplified, specifically a US-made drone with a camera, ignition package, batteries, propellers, spare parts, and spark care package for wildland backfire burns. The total value of the procurement is $9,315.96, and the commodity code is 03516 for Drone.
The sole source justification centers on employee safety and operational efficiency. The Mississippi Forestry Commission's GIS Team determined Drone Amplified was the only vendor supplying a US-made drone with the specific capabilities needed for their terrain and fire management operations. The agency emphasizes that the drone's aerial ignition feature allows employees to avoid walking through steep, hazardous terrain during prescribed burns, which is significantly safer than alternative methods like contracting helicopters. The procurement is positioned as a critical safety investment, with the agency noting that no price can be put on employee protection during high-risk wildland fire interior burning operations.

Textfield1: Research was performed by the MS Forestry Commission (MFC) GIS Team. The only vendor found to supply a US made drone with camera and ignition package was Drone Amplified. MFC looked for drones to provide the cameras and ignition package for prescribed burns and wildland backfire burns.
Textfield2: MFC reached out to the vendor directly after researching and finding only the one vendor that supplies the commodity.
Textfield3: MFC has areas in the state that are hard to get into due to terrain and fuel loading. The drone is the safer option to manage our natural resource and protect life. Drone aerial ignition keeps our employees from having to walk through steep terrain and heavy downed tree areas making it a much safer option. The only alternate option is contracting helicopters to support this mission which is definitely not in our budget currently.
Textfield4: There isn't a price we can put on employee safety. This commodity keeps our employees out of harms way during prescribed fire in heavy fuel loads and wildland fire interior burning operations. This unit keeps our employees out of reach of a headfire, prescribed and wild, to justify our purchase.
