About this file
This document is a Report of Pavement Cores prepared by Driggers Engineering Services, Inc. (DESI) for Burgess & Niple, Inc., focusing on drainage and roadway improvements in Crystal Beach, Florida, within Pinellas County. The investigation involved thirty-six pavement cores and shallow hand auger borings to examine the composition of existing roadways across various streets including Ohio Avenue, South Gulf Drive, Crystal Beach Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, Georgia Avenue, Florida Boulevard, and Hanby Street. The study was conducted on March 1st and 8th, 2023, with core samples taken to a standard depth of 2.0 feet below the pavement surface.
The pavement sections varied across locations, typically consisting of 1-3 lifts of asphalt with thicknesses ranging from 0.33 to 6.10 inches. Underlying base materials included sand and shell, soil-cement, crushed limestone, and in some cases concrete. Soil conditions were predominantly fine sand with variations in color and occasional shell fragments or organic material. Notably, no groundwater was encountered within the 2.0-foot investigation depth. The laboratory testing included organic content tests and grainsize analysis, which revealed the soils to be marginally suitable as subgrade material. The report suggests that for future roadway reconstruction, stripping of existing pavement, base, and subgrade may be necessary, with careful inspection recommended to identify and replace any unsuitable soil zones.
