About this file
This document contains a question-and-answer session regarding the special inspections and testing requirements for the CAMS Phase III project in Salem, Oregon. The project is located in Marion County and the City of Salem, and the scope includes field verification that construction is being performed in accordance with plans, specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
The key details covered include the following: Mohawk Metals, an AISC approved fabrication facility, will be performing its own non-destructive testing (UT), eliminating the need for a third-party inspector to conduct this testing. The geotechnical engineer of record will be responsible for field density testing (compaction). The micro-pile grout will require compressive strength testing, to be performed by the third-party inspector a few times per week. For the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) application, the installer will fabricate test samples for laboratory verification of ultimate tensile testing and elongation, with a frequency of 10-15% of all samples. Lastly, there is spray-applied fireproofing on the project, the details of which are provided in the attached shop drawings.

CAMS Phase III Special Inspections and Testing Q&A
1 . Since Mohawk Metals is an AISC approved fabrication facility, we assume they have been approved by the City of Salem for “Approved Fabrication” status and that special inspections in their facility by outside third-party inspection agencies are not needed; however, some Approved Fabricators are not performing their own NDE (UT), would the CAMS III special inspector be required to perform UT or does Mohawk have those capabilities?
A: Mohawk uses an inspection company out of Eugene for all of their UT testing, and they are able to perform all other NDE’s in house.
2. Is the Geotech of record performing field density testing (compaction)?
A: Yes, Per Table 1 on S004 this is performed under the Geotech.
3. Does the micro-pile grout require compressive strength testing? Who is responsible for the testing and what is the frequency of testing?
A: Yes, the grout will require testing by the third party inspector. It’s not a daily occurrence but a few times a week. The micro-pile grout testing is expected to be completed near the end of 2023.
4. During application of the (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) FRP, the installer will fabricate test samples for laboratory verification of Ultimate Tensile Testing and Elongation. The frequency of testing can vary between 10 to 15% of all samples, with 15% being the most common. What is the requirement for this project?
A: The testing frequency is listed in Table 6 of sheet S004
5. Is there spray-applied fireproofing on this project, and roughly how much? Testing frequency is dictated by square-feet.
A: Yes, there is spray-applied fireproofing. See attached shop drawings.
Notes for bidding:
· All the shear walls on levels 1-4, other than the Rotunda core, are already installed.
· All ceiling beams in the G Level are complete.
