About this file

This document is a Task Order for trail maintenance and construction work on the Chadwick OHV Trail System located on the Ava District of the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri. The work is organized by trail priority and consists of new trail construction and maintenance activities including clearing, grubbing, grading, crowning, drainage maintenance, brush cutting, logging out, danger tree removal, turnpike construction, aggregate surfacing, rock crib wall construction, and erosion control.

Trail #132A is the highest priority, designated as Trail Class 3 for motorized use with a native surface design. Design specifications for Trail #132A include a 50-inch tread width, 3-8% cross slope, 5-15% grade, maximum 15-30% pitch density, 6-8 foot brush cutting height, 60-72 inch brush cutting width, and 8-10 foot design turn radius. Maintenance requirements include reestablishing entrenched areas and mud-holes with compacted, suitable material; installing a minimum of 50 grade dips per mile at approximately 100-foot spacing; reclaiming and conserving on-site material; and removing danger trees within 30 feet of the trail centerline. Additional priority trails include #131, #113, and trails #101-119 designated as optional bid items. The detailed trail log specifies maintenance needs at particular benchmark locations for each trail, including lock block removal in certain sections, waterbar and grade reversal installations for drainage, social trail obliteration, and slope realignment work to meet design parameters and prevent water pooling.

Attachment: Task Order for Chadwick Trail Maintenance and Construction

Location:

All trails are located on the Ava District of the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri.

The following trail log is divided into two sections: the first section describes the work required for the Chadwick OHV Trail System and the second section describes the needed for trail construction within the Chadwick OHV trail system. This list will be created in order of priority preferences of work needed to be performed.

Trail Extension – Trail

Work to be performed:

The work shall consist primarily of new trail construction and trail maintenance.

The construction and maintenance work shall consist of, but not be limited to, the following:

Clearing, Grubbing, Maintenance and Restoration of Existing Trail (including grading, crowning, etc.), Drainage Maintenance (including ditching), Brush Cutting, Logging Out, Danger Tree Removal, New trail construction, Turnpike construction, Aggregate surfacing of trail tread, Rock crib wall construction, Bridge construction (optional), and Erosion Control.

A detailed trail assessment log follows.

Trail #132A

Inspection Date: 2024

Inspector Name: Connor Landeck, Jonathon Boyer

Length:

Design Class: Trail Class 3

Design Use: Motorized

Design Surface: Native

General:

Design Criteria:

The existing trail should be managed for Trail Class 3 ATV Design Parameters. The work maintenance to an existing section of the trail using design parameters for this current classification.

• Design Tread Width – 50” width.

• Design Cross Slope – 3% to 8%

• Design Grade – 5% to 15%

• Maximum pitch density: 15-30% of trail

• Brush Cutting Height – 6 ft. to 8 ft.

• Brush Cutting Width – 60”-72”

• Design Turn Radius- 8’-10’

Trail Maintenance:

Perform trail maintenance and new trail construction for trails as specified in the Trail Log and

Schedule of Items. Work shall include existing trail restoration (911.30), brush cutting (912.20), drainage maintenance (920), aggregate surfacing, logging out, and danger tree removal (912.40).

All work outlined in the trail-log for which there is no separate pay item shall be incidental to

Trail Maintenance & Construction.

Entrenched areas and mud-holes shall be drained & filled with suitable material, compacted, and graded to drain. Fill material must be well-compacted and stable with positive drainage established such that the fill material will not be washed away. Suitable soils may have migrated from the old roadbed and are often found within the disturbed corridor (e.g., in drainage ways, lead-off ditches, trail-side berms, silt traps, etc.). Drainage ways shall be cleared and these suitable soils shall be ‘pulled in’ and used in trail tread grading operations. Unsuitable material from ditches or silt traps shall be spread along trail shoulders, in depressions, or on fill slopes in a manner which will not affect watercourses and drainage from the traveled way or shoulders.

Frequent, large rolling grade dips with lead-off ditches are required. A minimum of 50 grade dips per mile is required. Install or restore grade dips (where needed and where they will be effective) at approximately 100 ft. spacing. There will be sections of trail where grade dips may need to be spaced closer together.

Suitable Material – Reclaim, conserve and use all suitable on-site material from maintenance and construction operations for specified work. Suitable on-site material shall include soil free of duff with a recognizable granular structure, having the same character as the trail surface and rock that can be accommodated in the trail structure.

Imported Suitable Material –Furnish a suitable, well-graded, compactable material which is not easily erodible and stable without confinement. Provide a sample to the COR for approval prior to delivery to site.

Obtain COR’s approval on all imported materials.

Danger Tree Removal - The Contractor shall remove trees and snags that are broken off or that are in a leaning, unstable position over the trail-way. Standing dead and danger trees within the clearing area and within 15 ft. of either side of the trail centerline shall be removed (i.e., a 30 ft.

wide corridor centered on the trail centerline).

Order of Precedence:

Any inconsistency in this solicitation or contract shall be resolved by giving precedence in the following order:

1 – The Schedule (excluding the specifications) 2 – Representations and Other Instructions 3 – Contract Clauses 4 – Other Documents, Exhibits, and Attachments

5 – The Specifications

Trail Priorities in Order

1. 132A

2. 131

3. 113

4. 101 to 119 (Option Bid Items)

5. 119 (Option Bid Items)

Trail Log References:

This trail log is for reference purposes and illustrates some of the items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the log is to give a general description of the trail. The trail log does not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item. For example, some items of work, such as grade dip locations, hazard tree locations, etc., are specifically called out in the trail log, however not all locations where such items are required have been called out. There will be other locations where such work items will be required. Refer to the contract instructions and specifications.
