Project Rio Grande National Forest Bunkhouse Asbestos Mitigation
General Information
1.0 Scope of Work
This project will involve the removal of approximately 2,900 square-feet of asbestos-containing building materials from ceilings, walls, windows, and flooring at three separate facility locations, cleaning the area of asbestos fibers, and the replacement of those building materials to include finishing and painting work. Work should be accomplished between the 30th of October and the 30th of December of 2026.
Contractor shall hire independent third-party to conduct air clearance after asbestos abatement activities before renovation work.
Additionally, the contractor shall paint the entirety of the existing interior walls and ceilings to match the existing color and condition.
Contractor shall build a schedule and complete the requirements in a logical order to prevent unsafe asbestos work and avoid repeat renovation work.
Contractor shall follow all laws and regulations governing asbestos work regardless if they are mentioned in the requirements.
2.0 Background
In January of 2026, an asbestos identification and testing contract was completed that confirmed the presence of asbestos in bunkhouses located on the Rio Grande National Forest. The Forest Service uses these bunkhouses for housing of seasonal and permanent employees. Due to the extensive use of some of these bunkhouses, there is a need to remove the asbestos-containing building materials in these facilities.
This project will require the removal of the identified asbestos-containing materials in a manner consistent with all laws and regulations governing the removal of asbestos. Additionally, the project will require the replacement of the walls, flooring, ceilings, etc. with suitable building material, i.e., drywall and wood flooring, and then the painting of replaced ceilings and walls.
