About this file

This document is a Forest Service Supplemental Specification (FSSS) to FP-14 for road maintenance work on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The specification establishes detailed technical requirements for aggregate materials used in road construction and maintenance.

The document specifies requirements for subbase, base, and surface course aggregates, as well as screened aggregate. All aggregate materials must be hard, durable particles or fragments of crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed gravel and must meet specific performance standards including: Los Angeles abrasion of 35 percent maximum (AASHTO T 96), soundness of aggregate using sodium sulfate with 12 percent loss maximum for both coarse and fine aggregate (AASHTO T 104, 5 cycles), durability index of 35 minimum for both coarse and fine (AASHTO T 210), fractured faces of 70 percent minimum (AASHTO T 335), and exclusion of organic matter and clay lumps. Subbase and base course aggregates must conform to specific gradation ranges defined in Table 703-1 across eight grading designations (A through H), with liquid limit requirements of 25 maximum (AASHTO R 58 and T 89). Surface course aggregates require the same general specifications plus additional requirements for liquid limit of 35 maximum and plasticity index specifications: 10±3 for Grading G and 8±4 for Grading H. The specification also includes Table 703-2 defining allowable deviations from target values based on percent by mass passing, Table 703-3 for surface gradation with six grading designations (F, G, H, S, T, U), and Table 703-13 establishing gradation requirements for screened aggregate across seven grading designations (L through R). All gradation testing must follow AASHTO T 27 and T 11 standards.
