About this file

This is a standard specification document for cattleguard grille construction for the Black Hills National Forest. The document provides detailed engineering drawings and technical requirements for fabricating a standard cattleguard grille assembly measuring 8 feet wide by 7 feet-9 inches in depth.

The grill top shall be constructed of square tube HSS 3X3X0.1875, with structural components including W8X15 steel beams, C8X11.5 channels, and rails spaced at 12-inch equal intervals. Bulkhead plates measuring 1/4" X 8" X 8" are required at each beam, channel, and rail location. The assembly features 13/16-inch holes drilled vertically through the bulkhead plates, with a 1/8-inch gap between components. Structural steel rails must conform to high-strength, low-alloy steel specifications per subsection 717.01(b), while all other structural steel shall conform to subsection 717.01(a). Bolts and nuts must meet subsection 717.01(d) requirements. The design live load shall follow AASHTO-HL-93 standards. All welding must conform to subsection FP-14 555.17 specifications. The completed assembly requires painting to Federal Standard Color 24325 per Section 563 requirements. These specifications reference the Federal Highway Administration Standard Specification for Construction of Roads and Bridges on Federal Highway Projects (FP-14), available at https://highways.dot.gov/federal-lands/fp-14.
