About this file

This document is a technical specification sheet for standard cattleguard grille and base details for the Black Hills National Forest (project number 619-05).

The cattleguard grille consists of an 8-foot by 7-foot-9-inch assembly constructed from a W8x15 steel beam with C8x11.5 channel, topped with square tube HSS 3X3X0.1875. The grill features 1/4-inch by 8-inch steel bulkhead plates at each beam, channel, and rail, with 13/16-inch diameter holes spaced 3 inches to 12 inches apart. The cattleguard base is a concrete foundation assembly (30 inches deep by 24 inches wide by 18 inches long) with embedded steel reinforcement, including #4 rebar, 3/4-inch diameter by 14-inch anchor bolts extending 2 inches above the concrete top, and stirrups at 12-inch on-center spacing with 6-inch end cover. The base includes C10x15.3 locking channels with 13/16-inch diameter holes, 6 studs (3/4-inch diameter by 4-inch length) welded to end plates, and 4-inch lifting eyes with lifting cutouts. With each two bases, one locking channel and 18 ASTM A307 3/4-inch by 2-inch bolts with lock washers are required. All structural steel must conform to Federal Highway Administration FP-14 specifications, with rails formed from high-strength, low-alloy steel per subsection 717.01(b) and all other structural steel per subsection 717.01(a). All welding must conform to subsection FP-14 555.17. All steel elements, including the grill top, must be painted in Federal Standard Color 24325 per Section 563. The design live load is based on AASHTO-HL-93 standards.
