About this file
This document is a set of construction specifications for the Ocala Springs Boardwalks - Juniper project, a federal contract with the USDA Forest Service to remove and reconstruct a boardwalk system within the Ocala National Forest. The project involves construction of a new modular boardwalk system utilizing post-on-pin foundations, along with specialty structures including overlooks, a kayak launch, and a Pedestrian Truss Bridge. The landscape architect is TSW (Atlanta, GA), with structural engineering by Volkert. The primary contact for the owner is Kristen Koehnemann at TSW.
The specifications detail comprehensive requirements across multiple divisions including demolition of existing structures, site clearing with artifact protection, cast-in-place concrete work, metal fabrications (guardrails, handrails, and boardwalk support assemblies), wood decking in Cumaru hardwood (1x6 boards with 1/4-inch joints), finish carpentry for handrails, water repellents on metal stringers, and pin foundation installation using Diamond Pier DP-100E 4B Twist Top systems with minimum 5000 psi precast concrete heads. All visible hardware must be blackened stainless steel. The specifications require temporary erosion and sediment control measures including fossil shell paths and construction entrance aggregate surfaces, with inspections weekly and within 24 hours of storms exceeding 0.5 inches of rainfall. Submittals must follow AIA or CSI/CSC forms with 15-day review periods (plus 7 additional days for consultant reviews and 30 days for authority having jurisdiction approvals). A mandatory pre-bid conference will be held onsite, and a mock-up of a 6-foot boardwalk modular unit with railing must be constructed and approved before production work commences.
