About this file

This is a Preparation and Paint Schedule specification for hull and deck painting work on a vessel.

The specification requires contractors to apply protective coatings to four primary areas: the underwater hull body (waterline to keel), freeboard (gunwale waterline to deck), outside deck, outside deck appurtenances, and interior bilge hull. Paint manufacturers must be PPG Protective and Marine Coatings or approved equal for exterior surfaces, with Devoe coatings specified for interior hull areas. Prior to ordering paint, contractors must submit manufacturer's cut sheets, application recommendations for cold/wet conditions, application locations, coating dry film thickness (DFT), number of coats, and color specifications for each coating type.

Surface preparation varies by location but generally involves pressure washing, sandblasting, or power tool cleaning to specified SSPC standards (ranging from SP3 to SP6). First coat applications typically consist of Dimetcote primer at 4 mils DFT, followed by Amercoat 240LT intermediate coats at 8 mils DFT each. Finish coats utilize Amercoat ABC 3 or Amershield Aliphatic polyurethane products at specified DFT values (5-8 mils depending on location), with colors ranging from black for underwater/freeboard areas to white for interior bilge and dark gray or matching existing colors for deck areas. The underwater hull requires antifoulant application with two stripe coats applied by brush and roller to welds, edges, and unsprayable areas. All work must comply with manufacturer recommendations, with substandard finishes removed and replaced at the contractor's expense. Interior bilge hull preparation includes an estimated 850 square feet of sandblasting to SSPC-SP6 standards.

SECTION 00300

PREPARATION AND PAINT SCHEDULE

1 PART 1 – GENERAL

1.01 Description: This Specification contains specific preparation and painting specifications.

1.02 Submittals: Prior to ordering paint, contractor shall supply the following for each different type of coating to be used:

-Manufacturer’s cut sheets -Manufacturer’s recommendations for application in cold and/or wet conditions -Description of where the coating is to be applied -Coating dry film thickness (DFT), number of coats, and color of each coat

2 PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.01 Paint Manufacturers:

A. PPG Protective and Marine Coatings or approved equal.

2.02 Finishes

The exterior hull and deck is finished with PPG Protective and Marine coatings. The interior hull is finished with Devoe coatings. New primers and finishes shall be compatible with existing coatings. Other finishes may be used if they are compatible with the existing primers and finishes and are approved by the CO.

2.03 Preparation and Paint Schedule – See last page of this section

3 PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.01 Remove all appurtenances from area to be painted. Protect building and other appurtenances unable to be removed.

3.02 Pressure wash entire exterior hull and inspect for damage. Report findings to COR.

3.03 Work includes spot repairs to freeboard area to include the visible rub/worn areas and minor rust spots. Repair other minor spots on underwater body hull as necessary.

3.04 Two stripe coats of antifoulant to be applied by brush and roller to all welds, edges, or unsprayable areas.

3.05 All painting shall be performed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

Substandard finishes shall be removed and replaced at contractor’s expense.
