About this file
This document is a memorandum from the New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment regarding official school bell times and teacher workday alignment for the 2026-2027 academic year. The memo establishes that classroom teachers will work a scheduled day of six hours and forty-five minutes (6.75 hours) in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the New Haven Board of Education and the New Haven Federation of Teachers (NHFT), inclusive of arrival and dismissal duties, instructional time, collaborative time, and professional preparation time. The document specifies detailed bell times for all elementary, middle, and high schools within the district, with start times ranging from 7:15 AM to 9:00 AM and corresponding dismissal times. Elementary and middle schools operate on five different start time schedules, while high schools operate on six different schedules, with the earliest high school start time at 7:15 AM and the latest at 8:00 AM. Dr. Mayo School, identified as an early childhood facility, operates on a tiered schedule with staff reporting at three different times.
Previous school-level time plan arrangements expire at the end of the current academic year, and any new start and end time proposals require formal approval from the school's teachers, the NHFT President, and the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. The memo clarifies that principals retain authority to arrange flexible schedules with individual teachers for programmatic or supervisory needs prior to official school start and end times, provided such arrangements remain consistent with contractual provisions. The document contains no pricing information, set asides, funding requirements, or contract award details, as it functions solely as administrative notification regarding operational scheduling for the upcoming school year.

To: All Staff From: Keisha Redd-Hannans, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Date: April 9, 2026 Re: School Bell Times and Workday Alignment
As we prepare for the 2026-2027 academic year, this memo provides official notification regarding school bell times and their alignment with the collective bargaining agreement between the New Haven Board of Education and the New Haven Federation of Teachers (NHFT).
Teacher Workday and Duties: In accordance with Article II, Section 3(a) of the NHFT Contract, classroom teachers and others on the teacher’s salary schedule shall work a scheduled day of six hours and forty-five minutes (6.75 hours). This workday is inclusive of arrival and dismissal duties, as well as instructional time, collaborative time, and other professional or preparation time.
School-Level Time Plan Arrangements: Please be advised that any previous start and end time plan arrangements decided at the school level with the entire staff will expire at the end of the current academic year. Moving forward, if a principal would like to propose a new start and end time plan, it will require the formal approval of the teachers at the school, the NHFT President, and the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.
Flexible Scheduling: As outlined in the NHFT contract, principals can arrange flexible schedules with individual teachers for programmatic or supervisory needs prior to the official start and end times of school. These arrangements must remain consistent with the provisions of Article II, Section 3(a).
