Key specifications include: cast-in-place concrete abutments meeting ACI 318 requirements with 3,500 psi strength; structural steel components meeting AISC specifications with hot-dip galvanization; drilled micropiles and helical piles for boardwalk foundations with design parameters specified in the geotechnical reports; prefabricated steel-framed boardwalks with pressure-treated wood decking and guardrails from approved fabricators (Wickcraft Company preferred); stone retaining walls using Michigan boulders or salvaged stone with geotextile and drainage systems; concrete and aggregate base courses per MDOT specifications; and erosion/sediment controls per NPDES requirements. The contractor must manage temporary utility interruptions with 48-72 hours notice, maintain existing site access for the Visitor Center and North Country Trail, maintain normal business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday) unless approved otherwise, comply with noise limits not exceeding 70 dB(A) at 50 feet for repetitive impacts, and implement a site-specific Accident Prevention Plan addressing construction hazards. Submittals required prior to preconstruction conference include liability insurance certificates, construction schedule with shop drawing and procurement timelines, Schedule of Values breakdown, comprehensive Safety Plan with Job Hazard Analysis, subcontractor list with labor compliance certifications, Quality Control and Waste Management Plans, and Temporary Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan. The project must comply with NPS management standards, historic/archaeological protection requirements (immediate work suspension if cultural resources are discovered), and environmental protection measures including tree protection, erosion control, and water quality preservation along Munising Creek.
