About this file

This document is an attachment describing site conditions for the Permafrost Tunnel Research Facility (PTRF), a 500-meter tunnel complex excavated into discontinuous, ice-rich permafrost that was initially constructed in the mid-1960s and expanded over the past decade. The facility is located in a region requiring active climate control to maintain below-freezing conditions, with a refrigeration system automatically engaging when outside temperatures exceed 26°F to prevent permafrost melting during non-winter months. The tunnel complex features two separate portal entrances: a South Portal and a North Portal, each with associated infrastructure visible in accompanying photographs showing snow-covered ground, concrete structures, and metal entrance structures.

The refrigeration system comprises two compressors positioned outside the tunnel, each paired with an evaporator unit located inside the tunnel's first crosscut. A complementary ventilation system with fans and ductwork circulates refrigerated air through the tunnels when temperatures rise above 26°F and draws in cold external air when temperatures drop below 26°F. Photographs document the current condition of both compressor units and evaporator assemblies at each portal location, providing visual reference for the existing mechanical infrastructure and site environment. This document serves as a site conditions reference attachment, likely supporting a separate solicitation or contract requirement related to facility maintenance, upgrades, or operational support.

Attachment 1: Permafrost Tunnel Research Facility (PTRF) Site Conditions

The PTRF, initially constructed in the mid-1960s and expanded over the past decade, is a 500-meter tunnel complex dug into a large block of discontinuous, ice rich permafrost. In non-winter months, a refrigeration system is used to keep the tunnel below freezing and prevents melting of the permafrost when outside temperature exceeds 26F. The following pictures are provided as guidance for site conditions. The tunnel has two entrances – North and South.

Figure 2: North Portal Entrance to the Tunnel

1.2 Permafrost Tunnel Refrigeration System:

The refrigeration system consists of two refrigeration compressors (outside), each paired with an evaporator (inside) both in the first crosscut of the tunnel complex. The complimentary ventilation system (consisting of fans and ductwork) circulates the refrigerated air inside the tunnels when temperatures rise above 26F and blows in cold air from outside when temperatures drop below 26F.
