STATEMENT OF WORK: CLEVELAND LLOYD DINOSAUR QUARRY
Project: Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry Building Replacement. Jurassic National Monument.
1. Background
The Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, located in Emery County, UT, has been designated as part of the
Jurassic National Monument. The BLM has a requirement to replace two aging quarry shelter buildings with a single building. The quarry shelter buildings were installed in 1975-1976. The site grading and roof drainage of the existing structures has caused drainage flow to concentrate adjacent to the building and leaky drain systems have allowed moisture to infiltrate the quarry area causing damage to the bone bed.
The purposes of this project are to provide protection to the paleontological resource and improve the visitor experience.
2. Scope
The building replacement project will include removal of two existing structures and installation of a 2,080 square foot enclosed building with a single pitch shed style roof to direct rain and melting snow away from the quarry area. The structure’s roof will extend over a 1,440 square foot shaded patio that will be utilized for additional exterior display and interpretive space to improve the visitor experience. In addition to the structure replacement, the ground adjacent to the building will be graded to provide positive drainage away from the building area. Subsurface drainage protection will also be installed to reduce the risk of surface water infiltration in the vicinity of the building. Sidewalks will be rebuilt as needed to provide pedestrian access. Visitor access will be facilitated with an interior walkway along one side of the

building. Two raised platforms accessible from the shaded patio area will also allow a close-up view of the excavation area.
3. Objectives
The purpose of the project is to protect the active quarry area from vandalism and weather. The building project will address drainage deficiencies with the structures and adjacent area that have caused paleontological resource damage. In addition, the new building will improve access to the quarry area for paleontological excavation and enhanced visitor experience.
4. Tasks
Contractor shall furnish all labor, material, equipment, tools, transportation, and supplies necessary to complete the work according to the contract. To summarize, the work would include:
A. Staging of material and equipment.
B. Retention and protection of paleontological resources and existing displays.
C. Demolition/salvage of existing buildings, infrastructure, and materials, including:
a. Removal of existing buildings and viewing platforms.
b. Retention and protection of existing sidewalk, where indicated in project plans.
c. Removal of a portion of existing walkway.
d. Removal of existing retaining walls, sidewalk, and subsurface drainage system.
e. Removal of existing pea gravel and liner from behind buildings.
f. Pea gravel from Item “e.” is to be salvaged for re-use.
g. Retention and protection of existing surface drainage features.
h. Pulling back soils and stockpile for potential reuse.
i. Grading to historical drainages.
j. Grading to create V-ditch and route storm water around and away from Quarry area.
