About this file

This document is a Bridge Inspection Report for the (441)50-42-00690 E bridge located on SR 441 over the Wabash River, CSX Railroad, and Road in Vincennes, Indiana. The bridge was constructed in 1931 and has undergone several rehabilitation projects over the years, the most recent being in 2017.

The report provides details on the bridge's condition, including the deck, superstructure, and substructure. It notes that the deck wearing surface exhibits moderate cracking, the superstructure has minor deterioration, and the substructure has some minor cracking and spalling. The report states the bridge is currently open with no posting, and provides its load rating details. Based on the overall condition assessment, no immediate rehabilitation or replacement work is recommended at this time. The report also includes various photos documenting the bridge's current state.

This report appears to be related to the federal contract opportunity for the rehabilitation of the Lincoln Memorial Bridge at George Roger Clark National Historical Park, though the two documents do not directly reference each other.

CONDITION COMMENTS

(58) DECK: 6 - Satisfactory Condition (minor deterioration)

Comments:

Deck underside patching was done in 2017 under DES No. 1006491, Contract No. B-34972 as needed. Appears predominantly sound; however, minor cracking on deck underside visible; some with light efflorescence. Generally, the patching of the deck underside is sound but does have small, localized patches appearing cracked.

(58.01) WEARING SURFACE: 6 - Satisfactory Condition

Comments:

New LMC bridge deck overlay placed in 2017 under DES 1006491, Contract B 34972. The wearing surface exhibits large amounts of longitudinal and map/shrinkage cracking up to moderate width - predominately at the western two-thirds. Chaining during the 2018 inspection revealed approximately 40 SFT of delamination around cracked areas (approximately 0.2% of total surface area).

Periodic transverse cracks in sidewalks.

Facility Carried: SR 441

(59) SUPERSTRUCTURE: 7 - Good Condition (some minor problems)

Comments:

Previously documented spalling with exposed reinforcing (estimated at approximately 115 SFT) were patched, and previously documented moderate cracking (estimated at approximately 29 LFT) were epoxy injected in 2017 under DES 1006491, Contract B 34972; only very small amount of efflorescence visible on south arch of Span G.

(60) SUBSTRUCTURE: 7 - Good Condition (some minor problems)

Comments:

Minor deterioration on piers in the form of minor width cracks and small, localized spalling (see picture of Pier 6). Abutments have slightly more advanced deterioration where cracks have light to moderate efflorecence.

Minor cracking and scaling below water at Piers 3, 4 and 5 (BPD, UW Insp, 9/28/18)

(61) CHANNEL/CHANNEL

PROTECTION

7 - Bank protection needs minor repairs

Comments:

Designed riprap placed in 2017 under DES 1006491, Contract B-34972 appears to be holding well at west bank. 2018 U/W inspection reported that no defects of "structural significance" were observed at piers in the water.

Riprap at Piers 3, 4 and 5 appeared stable (BPD, UW Insp, 9/28/18)

(62) CULVERTS: N - Not Applicable

Comments:

Scour Plan of Action on file in District Bridge Inspection office; however, designed scour countermeasures were installed in 2017 under DES # 1006491 - Contract # 34972 to address calculated scour potential.
