About this file

This is an Aquatic Resources Delineation Report prepared for the National Park Service in December 2022 by WSP USA, Inc. for the Glen Canyon Recreation Area Bullfrog Launch Ramp Relocation project in Lake Powell, Utah. The report documents the results of a field survey conducted in October 2022 to identify and delineate aquatic resources within a 331.43-acre Area of Potential Effect (APE).

The survey identified 17 ephemeral drainages (ED-01 through ED-17) and 7 wetland features (WL-01 through WL-07) within the project area. The ephemeral drainages range from minor erosional features to well-defined channels, with OHWM (Ordinary High Water Mark) widths varying from 1 to 13 feet and depths from 0.25 to 2 feet. Total acreage of ephemeral drainages within the APE is approximately 6.148 acres. Wetland features include lacustrine, palustrine, and littoral classifications, with WL-01 representing the largest feature at 8.955 acres. The report provides detailed stream data sheets for each drainage containing information on hydrology, physical characteristics, habitat composition, substrate percentages, bank erosion patterns, vegetation, and anthropogenic effects. The project area includes the Colorado River and Lake Powell shoreline, with drainage patterns flowing generally toward the lake and influenced by precipitation events and stormwater runoff from nearby roads and topographic features.

Comments

The drainage originates from sheet flow and stormwater from ED-02. The ephemeral drainage runs through a culvert under the access road to the water treatment facility. OHWM varies from 2-6 feet and gets wider as the drainage heads south. OHWM depth ranges from

0.5 – 1.5 feet. Large amounts of windblown Russian thistle skeletons in drainage. Bank heights also vary up to 12 feet in height in the southern reaches of the drainage within the APE.

Drainage is bound by the Stanton Creek Campground Road on the west and is fed by stormwater runoff from the road. The presence of the road concentrates flows in the drainage. As the drainage flows SW and intercepts erosional channels, OHWM indicators become more prominent. The drainage flows next to the APE and ultimately becomes ED-08.

Comments

The drainage begins as an erosional feature from sheet flow supplied only from direct precipitation to the hills and cliffs to the northwest of the APE. The erosional feature develops minor OHWM indicators within the APE. The drainage combines with ED-05 to the southeast of the APE.

Comments

ED-07 is a relatively significant ephemeral drainage that runs north to south within the APE for approximately 0.35 miles. The drainage is fed by precipitation events and runoff on the cliffs and hills to the west. OHWM indicators are consistent and prominent. The drainage does develop braided channels at times which likely change after significant runoff events.

ED-08 is a well-defined ephemeral drainage with consistent, distinct OHWM indicators. The drainage is fed by runoff from ED-02 –

ED-06, and small erosional features to the northeast of the APE. The drainage flows southwest into Stanton Canyon. The drainage channel crosses Stanton Canyon dRoad via a low-water crossing.

ED-09 consists of two drainage channels that combine into one within the APE. The northern channel has distinct OHWM indicators and collects water from a relatively large, localized watershed to the northeast. The southern channel resembles an erosional channel that collects water as sheet flow during precipitation events to the east of the APE.
