Battery Electric Bus Design
It is anticipated that Battery Electric Buses (BEB’s) will be provided to support (2) bus routes along the
Canyon. It is anticipated (10) dedicated charging stations will be provided in the new bus parking lot as well as (1) dedicated charging station located at an alternative location on the site, and (1) located within a bus maintenance bay.
Base Bid:
For the purposes of this project, please anticipate the following which is based on Proterra charging stations and control systems.
The bus charging infrastructure is anticipated to be served by a new pad mount 480V/3PH transformer which will be located in the utility yard on the south side of the Maintenance Building. APS is to provide and install the utility transformer and the incoming primary cable, the EC shall be responsible for all trenching and conduit. EC is to provide and install the pad and all secondary conduit and conductors. APS is to provide the CT Meter, and the EC is to provide the CT Enclosure with meter housing, and all make all connections to the meter.
It is anticipated that (4) parallel runs of 3-1/2” conduit will be provided from the utility transformer to an
800A, 480/277V fused service disconnect. Two of the conduits will be provided with 4#500MCM copper conductors. The disconnect will then feed into a 800A automatic transfer switch (see generator section below) and then into a 800A electrical distribution panel. The electrical distribution panel will feed (1)
30kVA 480:208V step-down transformer and (3) Power Control System (PCS) cabinets which are each capable of controlling (4) bus charging dispensers. The 30kVA transformer will feed a 100A, 120/208V electrical panel which will feed the miscellaneous low voltage electrical loads including receptacles and generator equipment loads. The electrical connection to each PCS is anticipated to be 200A therefore requiring (1) 2-1/2” conduit with 4#3/0 AWG conductors and 1#6AWG grounding conductor. Room will be provided to expand the number of PCS cabinets to a total of (12) to account for potential future expansion of the bus charging dispenser. The electrical distribution panel shall also be equipped with an externally mounted listed surge suppression device.
An additional bus charging station will be provided within one of the maintenance building’s Work Bays. It is anticipated that (1) 75kVA 208:480V step up transformer will be required to provide the required voltage for the charger. This transformer will be fed on the primary side by 3#250MCM conductors and 1#4 ground.
The secondary side will have 4#1AWG conductors and (1) 1#6 ground and will feed a 100A disconnect. This disconnect will then feed into the stand-alone bus charger.
From each PCS location, the contractor shall provide (1) 2” conduit for power and (1) 1” conduit for communications to each charging dispenser location. This alterative includes (10) canopy mounted, pantograph charge dispensers located above each bus and (1) pedestal mounted charging dispenser location for the remote bus charging location. Please refer to Civil drawings for locations of all (11) charging dispensers. Also provide (1) spare 2” conduit and (1) spare 1” conduit from future PCS locations out to each bus parking stall (31 total stalls) to provide infrastructure for future charging dispensers.
The PCS cabinets shall be provided with demand optimization capabilities which limit the number of buses charging at any given time to (5) busses and limit the demand to the electrical grid to 150kW.
Standby Generator:
To provide standby capacity beyond 60-90 minutes, it is anticipated that a 275kW standby generator will be required. Base bid shall consist of a natural gas generator which will require a new underground gas line to the nearby Fueling Station. A bid alternate shall also be provided to provide a diesel generator in lieu of a natural gas generator. A diesel generator would require a 24-hour base tank located beneath the generator and the gas line from the Fueling Station will not be required. The final selection will be made during the DD
Phase of design after further discussion and coordination with NPS staff. Refer to civil drawings for anticipated gas-line routing. The generator shall provide standby power to a 400A automatic transfer switch
(ATS-1) that gets normal power from the 400A utility service disconnect, and ATS-1 shall feed into the electrical distribution panel indicated above. The size of this genset is anticipated to be approximately
175”L x 58”W x 80” high. Three feet, four inches of clearance is required on all sides around the generator.
This is for the standard enclosure, if higher level acoustic ratings are required, the generator will grow in length and height. The average sound pressure level at 7 meters for each generator running at full load can be found in the table below:

Solar Design
A preliminary investigation of the impact of implementing a solar PV system on the roof of the bus parking canopy, was done using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) PV Watts Calculator (simulation) on-line program. The intent of the solar array would be to offset the operating costs of the BEB’s, these would not be used to directly charge the buses due to the fact that they will be out on routes throughout most of the daytime hours. The solar panel canopy footprint for the Preferred Alternative is anticipated to be 478-feet by 70-feet giving a total square footage of 33,460SF. Using an 80”x40” solar panel, an estimate of approximately 1,206 panels can fit on the structure and produce approximately 482.4kW of electricity or
701,483kWh/Year. Calculations were run using a panel lying flat on the roof, a 2” spacing is anticipated to allow for racking hardware, and a clear view of the sky. If actual conditions change, the electrical value of the system (show below) may decrease.
• Variables such as the potential build-up of snow are not accounted for in this initial study. These will impact the total annual production of the system, but further/detailed investigation is required to understand how much.
• Studies have shown that single axis rotation of solar panels provides and increased efficiency of 25 to 35 percent and dual-axis trackers provide an additional 5 to 10 percent. Adding trackers to the system adds anywhere from 40% to 60% to the total cost of the installation.
Electrical infrastructure for this installation is anticipated to consist of microinverters located at each solar panel which will convert DC power to AC power. These will feed back to a combiner panel which will be located on the canopy structure. This combiner panel will then feed back through a PV utility meter to an
800A/3P disconnect and then to an 800A/3P breaker located in the Main Distribution Panel. See attached one-line diagram for additional information.
Based on this study, the initial cost of the system would be on the order of $1,206,000.00 with an annual electrical value of $71,691.00. Payback would be roughly 16.8 years. The annual electrical value is estimated using an average retail electricity rate of 0.102$/kWh. This number may vary depending on actual demand billing, usage, and utility rates.
Arizona does offer some solar PV incentive and rebate programs. This will be investigated as we move further into the design process.
An energy demand analysis was performed by the NPS for the anticipated bus fleet. The analysis was performed with the assumption that (8) buses will be in service on a typical day, two of which will have a consumption of 129kWh per day and six of which will have a consumption of 272kWh per day. These numbers are derived based on route information and the scheduled bus services and have been used as a baseline for determining the anticipated solar offset.
As mentioned above, the annual production of the solar array is anticipated to be 701,483kWh. Using the numbers from the fleet analysis, the yearly consumption for charging the buses is anticipated to be
689,850kWh. This shows that on a typical day, the solar array will be able to produce 102% of the needed load. There will be days where production is lower and utility power is needed however there will also be days where excess energy is provided back to the utility grid. Using a greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator provided by the EPA, an offset of 701,483kWh is equivalent to 497 metric tons of carbon dioxide or 549,468 pounds of coal burned.
Using an average retail electricity rate of 0.102$/kWh, without any solar offset, an average monthly electricity bill would be approximately $5,863. As mentioned above, the electricity rate will vary depending on actual demand billing, usage, and utility rates. This number is to be used for rough pricing only. Per the solar offset numbers stated above, on an average month with a fully sized solar array, the utility bill would be at or near zero with potential for the system to sell power back to the grid.
• Bid Option: An alternate investigation was performed using panels mounted at an optimal 36-degree tilt using a fixed mount system which provided approximately 284kW of electricity or 484,213kWh/Year. In this configuration 711 panels are able to fit on the structure and require a 2’8” gap between panels to avoid shadowing. Additional structural members will be required to achieve a 36-degree tilt, please refer to the structural narrative for more information. On a typical day, this configuration would be able to produce 70% of the needed load. Using a greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator provided by the EPA, an offset of 484,213kWh is equivalent to 343 metric tons of carbon dioxide or 379,282 pounds of coal burned. The initial cost of this system would be on the order of $711,000 with an annual electrical value of $49,487.00 and a payback of roughly 14.4 years.
Please see attached Solar PV calculation, showing the full characteristics and results of the study.
Revision to the Lightning Protection System Section of the Basis of Design Report:
Electrical Contractor to provide add-alternate pricing to provide and install a lightning protection system on both the Maintenance Building and Bus Canopy with an underwriter’s laboratories Master ‘C’ label.
Contractor shall coordinate all ground rod locations on roof with architect while developing submittals.
Submittals shall require full roof plans with all ground rod (and all other equipment) indicated for review prior to submittal approval. Careful consideration shall be made to conceal exposed conductors from public view, to the greatest extent possible.

Powering Ahead Generac ensures superior quality by designing and manufacturing most of its generator components, such as alternators, enclosures, control systems and communications software. Generac also makes its own spark-ignited engines, and you’ll find them on every Generac gaseous-fueled generator. We engineer and manufacture them from the block up — all at our facilities throughout Wisconsin. Applying natural gas and LP-fueled engines to generators requires advanced engineering expertise to ensure reliability, durability and necessary performance. By designing specifically for these dry, hotter-burning fuels, the engines last longer and require less maintenance. Building our own engines also means we control every step of the supply chain and delivery process, so you benefit from single-source responsibility.
Plus, Generac Industrial Power’s distribution network provides all parts and service so you don’t have to deal with third-party suppliers. It all leads to a positive owner experience and higher confidence level. Generac spark-ignited engines give you more options in commercial and industrial generator applications as well as extended run time from utility-supplied natural gas.
