3.01 SPECIAL PROJECT CONSIDERATIONS

A. Do not disturb sound, original material which is in place or is found at the site, unless specific agreements between the Owner and Contractor have been reached. Before beginning each area of Work, examine with the Project Manager each area to determine which items, features and materials are to be retained and protected. 4. Do not remove nails from the finished or exposed side of woodwork. Drive nails through or pull from the back-side such that the nail head does not splinter the finished face.

5. When prying cannot be avoided, protect finished surfaces and materials scheduled to remain or be reinstalled. Use sacrificial wood blocks, surface protection such as protective carpeting or other approved means agreed to by the Project Manager.

6. Throughout the facility, use non-invasive/non-destructive methods. The Owner realizes, however, that certain aggressive methods may need to be employed to complete the Work. All aggressive methods must be approved by the Project Manager in advance. The Project Manager reserves the right to reject inappropriate methods not in conformance with accepted and recognized historic preservation/rehabilitation standards.

7. When invasive and aggressive methods are unavoidable and fully agreed to by the Project Manager, the Contractor shall submit, for the Project Manager’s approval, proposed methods for repairing and/or mitigating such damage.

8. When conflicts arise regarding what may constitute appropriate methods, the Specifications shall prevail.

3.04 HISTORIC DISCOVERIES

A. In the event that features, materials or artifacts (either historic or pre-historic), are uncovered or discovered during the execution of above-ground or below ground Work, notify the Project Manager immediately. The following procedures will be instituted:

1. Project Manager will issue a verbal Work suspension directing the Contractor to cease all construction operations at the location of a potential historic discovery, to allow the Project Manager to evaluate the significance of the find. A written Work suspension order will be issued within one business day of the verbal Work suspension order.

2. Such Work suspension will be effective until such time as the Project Manager and other qualified personnel can evaluate the potential historic discovery for their significance. Any Work suspension direction will contain the following:

a.A clear description of the Work to be suspended.
b.Any instructions regarding issuance of further orders by the Contractor for material services.
c.Specific direction to the Contractor to minimize the Work suspension costs (i.e., Work elsewhere while find is being evaluated).
d.Estimated duration of the temporary suspension.

3. If the Project Manager determines the historic discovery requires further review and/or action, Project Manager may extend the duration of the Work suspension order in writing.

4. Equitable adjustment of the construction Contract time will be made for temporarily suspended Work in accordance with the General Conditions.

3.05 INSPECTION FOR TEMPORARY PROTECTION OF HISTORIC FABRIC
