2.4 Task 4 Courses:
Title - Intermediate Force Capabilities: Supporting the Joint Force in Campaigning and Integrated Deterrence.
Course Summary:
Intermediate Force Capabilities (IFC), which include Non-lethal Weapons (NLW), complement Joint Force lethality and agility by providing force application capabilities that control the scope and scale of effects applied against selected targets between presence and lethal force. IFC applications are designed to neutralize threats by relying on precision nonlethal effects that minimize collateral damage and casualties. These unique capabilities are always employed with lethal weapon backups – should escalations necessitate lethal force. The course will provide an understanding of the tactical relevance and utility of these capabilities, benefits they offer towards achieving operational and strategic goals and planning considerations for employing them. Also, this course will explore how IFC/NLW complement Joint Force lethality and agility in contemporary operations that include Gray Zone engagements. Other areas to be analyzed include potential “game breaking” systems – enabled through directed energy – and approaches to overcome employment challenges endemic to nascent technologies. Below are the course topics:
IFC History, Relevance and Current Status Current and Developmental Technologies Public Perception, Political, and Ethical Issues Legal Implications Human Effects Characterization IFC Relevance for Contemporary Operations IFC in Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) IFC Considerations for TRANSCOM & Maritime Environments Differences between Civilian and Military IFC Group Preparations/Presentations on IFC Capabilities Range/Demonstration Day Capstone assignment, Course Review and Survey Completion
