About this file
This document is a request for an alternate method approval related to a federal contract opportunity for construction of the Sloan Canyon Contact Station. The Bureau of Land Management Southern Nevada District Office is seeking to reduce the required fire flow for the 3,000 square foot facility from 1,500 gallons per minute for 2 hours as specified in the 2018 International Fire Code, to 1,500 gallons per minute for 13 minutes (19,500 gallons total) in accordance with NFPA 1142 based on an analysis classifying the occupancy hazard level 4 and construction type V-B with no exposures. Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. as the delegated designer recommends approval due to the provision of an automatic sprinkler system designed to NFPA 13 standards to provide 300 gallons per minute for 30 minutes (9,000 gallons), along with a fire pump and over 28,500 gallon water tank to supply both the sprinkler system and a hydrant for fire department use.

2018 IFC International Fire Code B105 FireFlow Requirements for bldgs
The minimum fire-flow and flow duration for buildings other than one- and two-family dwellings, Group R-3 and
B105.1(2). Per Table B105.1(2) Column V-B row 0-3,600 sq.ft. the required fire flow is 1,500 gpm for a 2-hours duration.
Instead of using the 2018 IFC appendix B to determine the fire flow use the 2017 edition of NFPA 1142.
NFPA 1142 is the Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting. The facility has been analyzed per NFPA 1142 section 4.1.1 as follows: Occupancy hazard 4 Exhibition Halls, Construction type 000 (V-B); dimensions 81’ length 44’ width and 16’ height; with no exposures. The water supply to be provided is an underground water tank with a fire pump to 1 hydrant with a minimum fire flow of 1,500 gpm for at least 13 minutes duration (19,500 gallons).

This building is not required by code to be provided with an automatic fire sprinkler system. The owner has elected to provide an automatic fire sprinkler system designed in accordance with NFPA 13. The required fire flow is allowed to be reduced when a building is provided with an automatic sprinkler system. This system mitigates the required fire flow and provides life and property protection to the facility, assisting the firefighters.
The sprinkler system will be designed to provide 300 gpm for 30 minutes (9,000 gallons). The overall system will include a single tank with more than 28,500 gallon capacity and a pump system for fire flow to the hydrant and sprinkler flow to the building.
