About this file

This document contains the specifications for the Northern Research Station NRS Rhinelander 1st Floor Flooring Replacement project located at 5985 Hwy K, Rhinelander, WI 54501. The Owner is the USDA Forest Service – Northern Research Station, with Jeremy Kasprak serving as the Contracting Officer's Representative. The project involves demolition of existing flooring and installation of new resilient tile flooring with vinyl base and accessories. The contractor must submit a construction schedule within 14 days of the Notice to Proceed and provide a minimum two-week advance notice before beginning work. Work is restricted to normal business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Holidays, and the facility requires all doors to remain locked 24 hours per day with COR escort for site access. The contractor is responsible for protecting or relocating all room furnishings and returning them to original locations upon completion, obtaining written COR approval for temporary storage locations.

The flooring specification requires installation of vinyl composition tile flooring with an example acceptable product of Karndean Designflooring Van Gogh Gluedown (interlocking, 20MIL wear course, 48 inches by 6 inches, waterproof luxury vinyl plank) in a light color complementing adjacent remaining flooring, with options submitted to the COR for selection. The vinyl base shall be ASTM F1861 Type TV (solid, homogeneous) with a minimum thickness of 0.125 inches and height of 5 inches, including cove-style base and vinyl molding accessories for smooth transitions. Both flooring products carry a 20-year commercial warranty. The contractor must provide product data, samples, and shop drawings as action submittals, with an initial review period of 15 days and resubmittal review period of 15 days. Extra materials equal to 2 percent of the amount installed must be delivered to the Owner from the same production run. Installation must comply with manufacturer's written instructions, including proper substrate preparation per ASTM F710, with materials acclimated at least 48 hours before installation. The site maintains full Owner occupancy during construction, and all construction waste must be removed and legally disposed of without burning.

B. Concrete Substrates: Prepare according to ASTM F710.

1. Verify that substrates are dry and free of curing compounds, sealers, and hardeners.

2. Remove substrate coatings and other substances that are incompatible with adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, using methods recommended by floor tile manufacturer.

3. Alkalinity and Adhesion Testing: Perform tests recommended by floor tile manufacturer. Proceed with installation only after substrate alkalinity falls within range on pH scale recommended by manufacturer in writing.

C. Fill cracks, holes, and depressions in substrates with trowelable leveling and patching compound; remove bumps and ridges to produce a uniform and smooth substrate.

D. Do not install floor tiles until materials are the same temperature as space where they are to be installed.

1. At least 48 hours in advance of installation, move resilient floor tile and installation materials into spaces where they will be installed.

E. Immediately before installation, sweep and vacuum clean substrates to be covered by resilient floor tile.

3.2 FLOOR TILE INSTALLATION

A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for installing floor tile.

B. Lay out floor tiles from center marks established with principal walls, discounting minor offsets, so tiles at opposite edges of room are of equal width. Adjust as necessary to avoid using cut widths that equal less than one-half tile at perimeter.

C. Match floor tiles for color and pattern by selecting tiles from cartons in the same sequence as manufactured and packaged, if so numbered. Discard broken, cracked, chipped, or deformed tiles.

D. If built-in items are required to be set on top of floor tile, indicate on Drawings and revise first paragraph below.

E. Scribe, cut, and fit floor tiles to butt neatly and tightly to vertical surfaces and permanent fixtures including built-in furniture, cabinets, pipes, outlets, and door frames.

F. Extend floor tiles into toe spaces, door reveals, closets, and similar openings. Extend floor tiles to center of door openings.

G. Maintain reference markers, holes, and openings that are in place or marked for future cutting by repeating on floor tiles as marked on substrates. Use chalk or other nonpermanent marking device.

H. Adhere floor tiles to substrates using a full spread of adhesive applied to substrate to produce a completed installation without open cracks, voids, raising and puckering at joints, telegraphing of adhesive spreader marks, and other surface imperfections. If required by manufacturer.

I. Clean products according to manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.
