About this file
This is a roofing specifications document for the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station at the Redwood Sciences Laboratory in Arcata, California, dated July 16, 2026.
The document comprises four detailed specification sections covering rooftop fall protection, formed metal roof panels, SBS-modified bituminous membrane roofing, and storm drainage piping specialties. For rooftop fall protection (Section 05 52 17), the specifications require a permanently attached fall barrier system with guardrails compliant with OSHA standards, including 1-5/8 inch O.D. hot-rolled pickled electric weld tubing railings with a minimum 42-inch height and 200 lb structural load capacity in any direction. Acceptable manufacturers include Simplified Safety or approved equivalents, with hot dip zinc galvanized and powder coat paint finishes in bronze to match existing parapet flashing. The manufacturer must provide a two-year limited warranty and AWS D1.1 and D1.3 welding certifications. For metal roof panels (Section 074113), the specifications call for PAC-CLAD Snap-Clad standing seam aluminum panels in .032 thickness with a 1¾ inch high rib, 2-coat fluoropolymer exterior finish, and bronze color matching existing flashing. The system includes WIP 300 HT synthetic underlayment, H Shield polyisocyanurate 1½ inch insulation, and 1/2 inch USG Securock gypsum fiber cover board. Metal panel components must achieve UL 90 wind uplift rating and Class 1A-90 fire classification, with a two-year general warranty and 30-year finish warranty.
The SBS-modified bituminous membrane roofing system (Section 075216) specifies Johns Manville products as the basis of design, including DynaLastic 180 S base sheet and DynaLastic 180 FR CRG cap sheet, ProtectoR HD cover board, and ENRGY 3 polyisocyanurate insulation with minimum R8 rating. The roofing system must comply with FM Global 4471 and achieve Class 1A-90 fire classification with 90 psf wind uplift capacity. A 20-year manufacturer warranty and 5-year installer warranty are required, along with Johns Manville's Peak Advantage No Dollar Limit roofing system guarantee. The specification mandates extensive testing including electrical capacitance/impedance testing for entrapped water and high-voltage membrane testing for discontinuities, with all testing costs for retesting borne by the contractor. Storm drainage piping specialties (Section 22423) require cast-iron large-sump roof drains from manufacturers such as Josam Company, Smith, Tyler Pipe, or Zurn, along with associated flashing materials, cleanouts, and drainage accessories compliant with ASME and ASTM standards. All roofing work requires compliance with manufacturer installation instructions, field quality control inspections, and protection of the completed system during the construction period.
