A. The electrical portion of this project will include support for the following on the Chalmers P.Wylie VA Medical Center campus:

1. Provision of essential power from the critical branch to serve receptacles in the telecommunication rooms (TR).

2. Provision of additional receptacles for TR and/or Server rooms.

B. Specific provisions for this project will include evaluating the electrical service, and expanding electrical distribution as required to provide new receptacles in the TR closets. Each TR will be evaluated to ensure it has the required number of circuits & receptacles for the number of data racks. The critical branch of the essential electrical system (EES) will be used to serve circuits in the TR’s. Individual racks will be provided with uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that are compliant with the VA OEHRM design manual. Each telecommunication rack will also be provided with at least (2) vertical power distribution units (PDU) to serve power to communication equipment on racks. All telecommunication rooms will be evaluated to ensure all equipment complies with single point grounding per OEHRM design guidelines.

3. ELECTRICAL DEMOLITION

Demolition of electrical work will include:

A. Replacement of any existing individual UPS’s serving each telecommunications rack and/ or room.

B. Receptacles located in each server room will be analyzed to confirm they are on the proper branch of the EES. Any outdated, hazardous or improper receptacles will be demolished.

757-21-701 EHRM Infrastructure Upgrades – Columbus, OH – Tier

5. BUILDING POWER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

A. All building power distribution systems requiring modification or expansion are 208Y/120V.

B. In Building ACC, all existing TR’s appear to be fed from critical and/or normal branch(es) in adjacent electrical rooms. Most of the receptacles in TR's are quad type and on critical branch. There are 30A twist-lock receptacles on racks and walls to serve UPS's in existing TR's. Some of the racks also appear to have power strips to supplement outlets to support communication equipment on racks. For this project, each TR will be fed by at least two circuits from critical panelboards in adjacent electrical rooms.

Two 20A twist-lock receptacles will be provided on top of single telecommunication rack setups to serve power to UPS and rack mounted PDU’s. 30A twist-lock receptacles will be provided for two (2) floor telecommunication rack setups and 60A, 3ph power junction box will be provided to serve power for three (3) floor telecommunication rack setups. Vertical power distribution units (PDU) will be provided on the side of racks to support communication equipment.

C. The TR’s in Building ACC are not properly grounded in accordance with current telecommunications standards. A new main telecommunications ground bar (MTGB) will be installed in the server room and tied back to the main electrical service ground upstream. Downstream, grounding cables will be extended from the MTGB to a new ground bars in each TR. All required components within each TR will be bonded to the new TR ground bars.

D. Existing Telecommunication Ground Bars in TR’s of Engineering Building and Energy Center will be bonded to existing electrical Panel ground bus in respective building. Ground bars in TR’s in Engineering and Energy Center buildings shall also be bonded to the nearest steel column.

6. ELECTRICAL CALCULATIONS

A. Voltage drop calculations will be performed for all new feeders and branch circuits. Feeders and branch circuits will be sized to limit voltage drop to the levels recommended by the energy code (2% for feeders, 3% for branch circuits, with the combined drop no more than 5%).

7. GENERAL ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

A. Switchboards and Distribution Panelboards

1. New distribution panelboards will be sized for the loads they serve and include 30% spare capacity and spare space. Panelboard bussing will be copper. The distribution panelboard ampere interrupting current (AIC) rating will be fully rated and sized based on the available fault current.
