About this file

This is a Detailed Information Chart (Attachment 2) for a tree planting contract with the USDA Forest Service covering three major geographic items: the Taylor Park Area, the Lujan/Divide/Slumgullion area, and the North Zone Project Area. The work involves planting approximately 241,700 container-grown seedlings across 796.2 net plantable acres within the Grand Valley Ranger District on the Gunnison National Forest. Item 1 (Taylor Park Area) requires planting 42,660 lodgepole pine seedlings across 13 units totaling 95 net planting acres. Item 2 (Lujan, Divide, Slumgullion areas) requires planting 87,936 Engelmann spruce seedlings across 11 units totaling 337 net plantable acres. Item 3 (North Zone) requires planting 66,006 Engelmann spruce seedlings across 31 units totaling 261.8 net plantable acres. All seedlings are 1-year-old container stock with minimum 16-inch clearing and scalping diameters.

The specifications establish detailed requirements for each planting unit including acreage, trees-per-acre (TPA) density, spacing standards, seed lot assignments, boundary marking methods, walk-in distances from delivery points, and elevation/aspect/slope data. Planting locations range from 9,300 to 11,300 feet elevation across various aspects and slopes up to 42 percent. Non-planting areas exclude rocky areas, slash, roadsides, untreated burn ash pits, and areas of advanced regeneration. All Engelmann spruce plantings use natural shade and protection with specific microsite requirements (down logs minimum 6 inches diameter and 2 feet length, stumps minimum 8 inches diameter and 6 inches height, standing dead trees minimum 8 inches dbh, or rocks minimum 8 inches diameter and 6 inches height) positioned within 4 inches of planted seedlings. Lodgepole pine units 1-12 and 1-13 require tree shade cards, while all other units require no artificial shade protection. Most units provide direct vehicle access to delivery points, though several require walk-in distances exceeding 2,000 feet to unit centers.
