1.0 KWAJALEIN ISLAND, KWAJALEIN ATOLL, MARSHALL ISLANDS

Kwajalein Island (Figure 1) is located some 2300 nautical miles west of Honolulu, HI and approximately 50 nautical miles south of Roi-Namur. It is the location of the RTS Weather Station, the primary site for all weather related activities in the Atoll. It is also the location of the Kwajalein Mission Control Center (KMCC) and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), where Weather Station meteorologists provide direct support to the Range for Mission and Emergency Operations, respectively. An International Met System (IMET) radiosonde sounding ground station is located at the Weather station and is used for tracking and receiving data from balloon-borne GPS radiosondes to provide vertical profiles of the atmosphere to 30 km in support of daily USAKA operations, KREMS radars, and missions. The Kwajalein Polarimetric S-Band Weather Radar (KPOL) used to detect, analyze and record precipitating weather systems is co-located. Geostationary and polar-orbiting meteorological satellite ground stations, antennas, and data processing systems are located at the RTS Weather station.

Other weather related systems and equipment at Kwajalein include automated surface observation systems, a lightning detection network, and a mesonet. The surface observations systems near the runways on Kwajalein and Roi-Namur provide ground measurements in support of aviation. The Kwaj Mesonet sensor suite collects site temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and atmospheric pressure data, then periodically transfers that data to the weather station using an internal modem PCB and a regular dial-up phone connection. The lightning detection system pin-points a majority of cloud-to-ground strikes along with a small amount of in-cloud lightning.

1.13.1 Vaisala Automated Weather Observation System (K_AWOS)

Desc: VAISALA Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS IIIPT)

GFE: Various

Location: Runway EAST – Runway WEST

The Kwajalein AWOS (Automated Weather Observation System) is one of the newest and most advanced systems at the RTS weather station. The K_AWOS is a turn-key comprehensive surface and aviation meteorological system designed to automatically collect, disseminate, and archive surface weather information. The system continually collects more than 9 meteorological data parameters and provides fully compliant METAR, SPECI, SYNOP, and TAF reports. It also provides real-time surface observation data to display workstations located in the Kwajalein ATC tower, base operations, the EOC (Emergency Operations Center), and a remote web-based link to remote forecast operations [currently located at the AST offices in Norman, OK]. In addition, the system provides both dial-up and VHF ATIS (Automated Terminal Information Service) broadcasts. Several of the instruments have been co-located at a site near the west end of the runway.
