About this file

This document is a technical specification excerpt detailing coating and color requirements for federal contract equipment.

The specification mandates two distinct color schemes using SAE AMS-STD-595 color coding: color number 36640 (flat gray) exclusively for one PAO Cart, and color number 17925 (high-gloss white) for all other equipment. The primer requirement specifies MIL-PRF-23236, Type V or VI, Class 5 or 7 epoxy high durability primer, which is VOC compliant with no corrosion inhibitors and provides corrosion protection through high-build thickness environmental barriers. The primer must be applied in two coats with dry-film thickness of 4.0 to 6.0 mils per coat for a total of 8.0 to 12.0 mils. Surface abrasive blasting requirements vary based on primer thickness: 1.0 to 2.0 mils surface profile if primer is 5.0 mils or less, or 2.0 to 3.0 mils if greater than 5.0 mils, unless manufacturer instructions specify otherwise.

The topcoat requirement is MIL-PRF-24635, Type V or VI alternate topcoat for high solids and high durability polysiloxane coating, selected when continuous marine exposure is anticipated. Type V has maximum VOC content of 250 g/l while Type VI has maximum VOC content of 100 g/l, with topcoat applied over the specified primer and total dry-film thickness of 5.0 to 8.0 mils. Additional materials specified include MIL-PRF-81733 Class 1 sealing compound for corrosion inhibition and fastener sealing, available in Grade A (chromated) or Grade B (non-chromated), and AMS 3100 adhesion promoter for enhancing polysulfide sealing compound or adhesive adhesion.

Color IAW SAE AMS-STD-595 Color coding codes.

36640 is the color number for flat, gray color (only for PAO Cart, qty 1).

17925 is the color number for high-gloss, white color (for all other equipment), Primer

MIL-PRF-23236, Type V or VI, Class 5 or 7 (Epoxy High Durability Alternate Primer).

MILPRF-23236, Type V or VI, Class 5 or 7 is a VOC compliant epoxy high solids primer with no corrosion inhibitors. Corrosion protection is provided through a high-build thickness environmental barrier.

7.4.3.3 Thickness. MIL-PRF-23236, Type V or VI, Class 5 or 7 primer shall be applied in two coats, with the dry-film thickness of 4.0 to 6.0 mils per coat. Total dry-film thickness is 8.0 to

12.0 mils. If the primer is applied at a dry-film thickness of 5.0 mils or less, then the surface shall be abrasive blasted to the surface profile of 1.0 to 2.0 mils. If the primer is applied at a dry-film thickness of greater than 5.0 mils, then the surface shall be abrasive blasted to the surface profile of 2.0 to 3.0 mils, unless otherwise defined by the manufacturer’s application instructions.

Topcoat

MIL-PRF-24635 Type V or VI Alternate Topcoat (High Solids, High Durability Polysiloxane Coating). Use MIL-PRF-24635 Type V or VI when coating thickness and weight are not a limiting factor and when continuous marine exposure will be encountered (such as continuous flight deck duty or storage in an unsheltered location). Type V has a maximum VOC content of 250 g/l, and type VI has a maximum VOC content of 100 g/l. Apply MIL-PRF- 24635 Type V or VI over MIL-PRF-23236 Type V or VI, Class 5 or 7 high durability epoxy primer.

7.5.3.4 Thickness. The total dry-film thickness of the topcoat shall be 5.0 to 8.0 mils.

Sealing Compound

MIL-PRF-81733 Class 1 Sealing and Coating Compounds, Corrosion Inhibitive- Resists fuel, oil, & hydraulic fluid Sealing faying surfaces and wet installation of fasteners on permanent structure. Not intended for use as an integral fuel tank sealant. Grade A: chromated corrosion inhibitors Grade B: non-chromated corrosion inhibitors.

Adhesion Promoter

AMS 3100 Adhesion Promoter for Polysulfide Sealing Compounds- Used to enhance the adhesion of polysulfide sealing compounds or adhesives.
