About this file

This is a Specification Section for Thermal Board Insulation, detailing requirements for continuous exterior thermal board insulation in rainscreen wall applications. The specification requires basalt rock and slag mineral fiber board insulation, Type IV-B per ASTM C612, in 2-inch thickness with board dimensions of 48 inches by 72 inches. Installation must utilize corrosion-resistant steel screws (#10 minimum diameter) with a minimum of four screws per board for attachment to the wall substrate.

The specification establishes comprehensive performance criteria across multiple dimensions. Thermal resistance requirements specify R-values of 4.3 hr·ft²·°F/BTU at 25°F and 3.9 hr·ft²·°F/BTU at 75°F per ASTM C518/C177. Fire performance standards mandate flame spread and smoke development ratings of zero per ASTM E84, non-combustibility per ULC S114, and 1,200°F service temperature rating per ASTM C411. Moisture resistance limits water absorption to 1.2% per ASTM C209, water vapor sorption to 0.30% per ASTM C1104, and requires minimum water vapor transmission of 40 perms per ASTM E96. Physical properties include minimum density of 11.0 pcf, compressive strength of 1,220 psf at 10% deformation per ASTM C165, maximum linear shrinkage of 0.38% at 1,200°F per ASTM C356, and dimensional stability of maximum 0.1% linear change per ASTM D2126. The specification requires NRC acoustical rating of 0.85 minimum for 2-inch boards per ASTM C423 and non-corrosive properties per ASTM C665 and C795. Installation must be performed by contractors with minimum three years' experience in rainscreen insulation applications and manufacturer certification. The installer must provide a 5-year warranty on installation and workmanship, with warranties commencing at substantial completion. Installation tolerances allow maximum 1/4-inch deviation in 20 feet, 1/8-inch offset between adjoining edges, and 1/8-inch maximum gaps between boards. A factory-authorized service representative must inspect the installation and report results in writing.
