About this file
This document contains a site inspection report for the East Simpson 1 legacy well located in northern Alaska. The Bureau of Land Management conducted a surface inspection of the site in July 2022 and observed that the well cellar and wellhead remain intact, though some wooden pilings surrounding the well are now contained within an expanded reserve pit area as tundra has thawed. Two 1951 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey reference markers were also noted near the coastline east of the well. No significant changes were seen since the prior August 2021 inspection. The related federal contract opportunity is for remediation of the Tulageak Test Well #1 and its reserves under solicitation number 140L0623R0021 issued by the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management National Office.

BLM Arctic District Office Surface Inspection East Simpson 1 Legacy Well N 70° 55.043, W 154° 37.2856
July 2022
The East Simpson 1 legacy well is located in Section 18, Township1 8 North, Range 10 West, Umiat Meridian (Figure 1), approximately 55 miles southeast of Utqiagvik. BLM Natural conducted a surface inspection on July 19, 2022.
Husky Oil drilled the East Simpson well for the USGS in 1979 to a depth of 7,739 feet. The USGS currently uses the East Simpson for long term temperature monitoring. The site consists of a well contained within a wooden cellar, a pad, and a reserve pit.
Wooden pilings extend from the wellhead to the east. The reserve pit has expanded outward as tundra has thawed, and some of the wooden pilings are now contained in the reserve pit (Photo 1).
During the 2022 site visit there were several pilings and a partially buried pipe observed (Photo 2). The well cellar and wellhead are still intact (Photos 3 and 4). Two US Coast & Geodetic Survey reference markers dated 1951 was observed near the coastline east of the East Simpson well (Photo 5). There were no significant changes since the August 2021 site visit.
