About this file
This document contains a site inspection report for the Tulageak legacy well located in northern Alaska. The Bureau of Land Management conducted the inspection in July 2022 and found no significant changes since the prior 2020 visit. Measurements taken since 2017 document the ongoing erosion of the coastline near the well, with the distance between the well pad and reserve pit shrinking each year.
The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management to remediate the Tulageak test well and reserves. The solicitation number is 140L0623R0021 and is titled "NPRA LEGACY WELL REMEDIATION - TULAGEAK TEST WELL #1 & RESERVES." No further details are provided on products or services required, pricing terms, response dates, or other salient information.

BLM Arctic District Office Surface Inspection Tulageak Legacy Well
N 71° 11.3357, W 155° 44.2295 July 2022
The Tulageak legacy well is located in Section 7, Township 21 North, Range 14 West, Umiat Meridian (Figure 1), approximately 25 miles southeast of Utqiagvik. BLM conducted a surface inspection on July 19, 2022.
Husky Oil drilled the Tulageak well for the USGS in 1981 to a depth of 4,015 feet. The USGS currently uses the Tulageak well for long term temperature monitoring. The site consists of a well contained within a wooden cellar, a pad, and a reserve pit (Photo 1). Wooden pilings extend from the wellhead to the east (Photo 2). The well cellar is open on the east side (Photo 3).
There were no significant changes since the August 2020 site visit.
The coastline near the Tulageak well is eroding (Photo 4). Photo 5 is a view of the Tulageak well and reserve pit from the shoreline. We have been collecting measurements from the pad to the shoreline each year to document the rate of erosion.
