BLM Arctic District Office Surface Inspection West Dease Legacy Well
71° -155.6307 July 2022
The West Dease legacy well is located in Section 21, Township 21 North, Range 114 West, Umiat Meridian (Figure 1), approximately 27 miles southeast of Utqiagvik. BLM conducted a surface inspection on July 19, 2022.
Husky Oil drilled the West Dease well for the USGS in 1980 to a depth of 4,170 feet. The USGS currently uses the West Dease well for long term temperature monitoring.
The site consists of a well contained within a wooden cellar, a pad, and a reserve pit (Photo 1).
There are two small piles of drilling muds on the pad. The well cellar and wellhead are still intact. Wooden pilings extend from the wellhead to the northeast (Photos 2 and 3). There is evidence that Arctic fox have a den in the well pad (Photo 4). There were no significant changes from the last site visit.
