Tunneling or boring may be permitted on written approval of the Engineer, if indicated by economy of construction or necessity of preserving existing improvements. Pipelines to be installed beneath sidewalks, driveways, cross gutters, curb and gutters, concrete drainage channels, and other utilities shall be constructed by hand dig tunnels as designated on the drawings. If the earth in the tunnel sloughs off, the roof of the tunnel shall be broken down and excavated as an open trench, if directed by the Engineer.
Excavated material shall be neatly placed and kept shaped so as to cause the least possible interference with public travel. Toe boards at least twelve (12) inches high shall be placed along the traffic side of excavated material stockpiles placed in or adjacent to traveled lanes. Free access must be provided to all fire hydrants, water valves, meters and private drives. The Contractor shall control grading to prevent surface water from running into excavations. Obstruction of normal surface drainage shall be avoided and means shall be provided whereby storm and waste water can flow uninterrupted in existing ditches, culverts, other surface drains or in temporary drains.
All excess excavated material shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be removed from the site and disposed of by it at its own expense.
This work shall consist of performing all operations necessary to excavate all materials (such as: asphalt concrete, concrete pavement, aggregate base, cement treated base, cement modified soil, abandoned utility lines or facilities, etc.) regardless of the varying existing thicknesses, character and subsurface conditions, and no separate payment will be made therefor.
706-4.1 Maximum Length of Open Trench. No more trench shall be opened in advance of pipe laying than is necessary to expedite the work.
706-5.1 Over Excavation. The depth of trench excavation is the vertical distance between original ground and the bottom of the trench as shown on the plan.
Increased depth due to unsuitable material or rock or other unyielding material below the planned grade, and the depth of the pipe offset due to utility crossing as shown on the plans are not considered in determining the depth of over-excavation.
Over-excavation includes the removal of any material that comes into an excavation from outside the described limits and the Contractor requested an adjustment for the increased depth and/or the Engineer requested an adjustment for the increased depth. All work shall be authorized by the Engineer.
Payment for over-excavation shall be considered as included in the payment for Unclassified Excavation (Over-Excavation). The payment quantity is the volume of over-excavated material.
