Geotechnical Investigation Report Summary
This is a Geotechnical Investigation Report prepared by RMA Group for Parsons Brinckerhoff on behalf of the San Bernardino International Airport Authority, dated February 11, 2013, for the San Bernardino International Airport Infrastructure Improvements Project located at the northern portion of San Bernardino International Airport in San Bernardino, California. The investigation encompasses approximately 34.1 acres bounded by X Street to the north, 102nd Street to the east, 99th Street to the west, and Taxiway E to the south. The site was historically used as a bus yard in the northern two-thirds and for vehicle storage and aviation operations in the southern third. The proposed development includes construction of a San Bernardino County Sheriff Aviation Facility with a general aviation hangar, office building, taxiway improvements, and associated infrastructure. The geotechnical investigation was completed through 12 exploratory borings with depths ranging from 12 to 50.5 feet, supplemented by laboratory testing of representative soil samples. The investigation was conducted prior to any formal bid solicitation, with the final report delivered in February 2013 to support design and construction planning for the infrastructure improvements project.
The subsurface soils consist primarily of artificial fill in the upper portions, underlain by loose to medium-dense alluvial and aeolian sands and gravels with varying amounts of silt. Groundwater was not encountered during the investigation, with historical data indicating depths ranging from approximately 40 to 50 feet near the site. The report provides comprehensive geotechnical recommendations for foundation design, grading and earthwork, pavement construction, drainage, and temporary slopes, with isolated and continuous footing designs utilizing bearing capacities of 2,000 to 3,000 pounds per square foot and recommendations for asphalt and Portland cement concrete pavement sections for light aircraft loading. Key findings indicate negligible to moderate exposure to soluble sulfates, non-corrosive soil conditions for buried utilities, and low liquefaction potential despite the site's proximity to active faults including the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults. The report emphasizes the importance of geotechnical observation and testing during construction, particularly during grading, utility trench backfill, and foundation preparation phases, to ensure compliance with design specifications and to address any variations in subsurface conditions encountered during development.
