About this file
This document is a policy notification letter from the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital announcing changes to their smoking policy. Effective October 1, 2019, the hospital will implement a comprehensive ban on all tobacco and smoking products across its campus, covering cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, vape pens, e-cigarettes, and e-cigars. The policy applies to all individuals on the campus, including patients, visitors, contractors, volunteers, vendors, and employees, with potential Federal citations for non-compliance.
The letter, signed by Hospital Director Steven E. Braverman, M.D., emphasizes safety and health considerations, noting that tobacco products may need to be stored when visiting certain hospital areas due to fire risks near oxygen and other gases. The VA Hospital also offers assistance to veterans who wish to quit tobacco use, recommending that interested individuals contact their Primary Care Team for more information about cessation services.

• Cigarettes
• Cigars
• Pipes
• Chewing tobacco
• Vape pens, e-cigarettes, or e-cigars.
