About this file
This is a DD Form 2169, Special Packaging Instruction, issued by the Department of Defense for a dressed and containerized transmission (Part Number 12610296, National Stock Number 2520-01-714-0929). The form specifies detailed preservation, packaging, and marking requirements for a transmission assembly weighing 361 pounds housed in a reusable container weighing 679 pounds, with unit pack dimensions of 54.6 x 36.9 x 36.0 inches and a total weight of 1,040 pounds. The transmission assembly consists of one reusable container (Part Number 12610295) and one HD2500 SP transmission (Part Number 12601790). The instruction was revised on July 1, 2024 (Revision A).
The preservation procedure requires filling the transmission to operating level (10 quarts/20 pints) with MIL-PRF-32033 (P9) preservative applied to the torque converter and rear yoke, rotating the yoke to ensure complete internal coverage, then removing the preservative via oil extractor or syphon pump through the designated fill location before sealing all interior openings with appropriate caps or plugs. The packed container must be placed in a shaded area and monitored until internal relative humidity stabilizes at or below 30 percent, typically requiring a minimum of 24 hours, with desiccant replacement as needed. Special marking requirements include "CARC" in 1-inch black letters near the nameplate, "REUSABLE CONTAINER: DO NOT DESTROY" in 1/2-inch black letters on the lower container section, and the transmission serial number stenciled per MIL-STD-129. Inspection must comply with MIL-STD-2073-1, MIL-STD-129, and A-A-52462 standards, with any deviations from the preservation procedure requiring pre-approval from TACOM and the transmission manufacturer.
