SECTION 15255

VALVES AND ENCLOSURES

PART 1. GENERAL

1.01

SCOPE

This work consists of furnishing and installing valves, flush valves, stop cocks, valve operating rods and keys, valve boxes and appurtenances for use with valves and stop cocks.

1.02

MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

A.

Measurement: The quantity of this pay item will include each check valve, valve boxes, and other specified equipment, furnished and installed AS SHOWN ON DRAWINGS and/or as approved by C.O.R.

B.

Payment: Payment as measured above will be considered incidental to Section 15251 WATERLINES AND APPURTENANCES.

PART 2. PRODUCTS

2.01 Valves 3 inch and smaller shall be bronze, l25 pound (steam rating), screwed or flanged, meeting the requirements of the latest edition of Federal Specification WW-V-00-54b, Type I, II or III, Class A valves. The Contractor may use any type valve unless specified otherwise on the drawings, however, all valves specifications must be submitted for COR approval, including the tamper resistant host site valve.

2.02 Valve boxes shall be precast concrete or steel as typically manufactured by Christy or Brooks with bolted lids. Bolts shall be brass or other non-rusting material. All valve boxes must be submitted for COR approval.

2.03 Valves and appurtenances for watering stations and water service at the Salmon Creek Campground shall be as SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS.

PART 3. EXECUTION

3.01

GENERAL

A. The valve assemblies shall be fabricated and installed for the potable water line.

Each valve and its fitting shall be tested for correct operation. Valves not accepted by the C.O.R. shall be replaced.

B. Installation shall be in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

3.02 Valves shall be installed in such positions that they are readily accessible and can be easily and fully opened and closed without binding. Valves in enclosures shall be installed with the valve handle on top, plumb and centered, unless noted otherwise on the drawings. Valves in buildings shall be installed in the position shown on the drawings.

3.03

The valve box shall be centered over the valve(s). The floor of the excavation on which the box rests shall be compacted. In the final position, the box shall be at the correct elevation and there shall be clearance within the valve box for easy valve removal.

3.04

After the box is in final position, the area around the box shall be backfilled and compacted.

3.05 Galvanized steel pipe must be used for a minimum of two feet on both sides of all valves. Install galvanized steel unions on both sides of in-ground valves for easy removal.

3.06 Valve boxes encased by a concrete pad shall be sealed around the concrete to insure no water is trapped between the valve box and the concrete pad.

3.07 Bronze nipples shall be used to attached valves to PVC pipes. Plastic male adapters shall not be used.
