Trail Construction Notes Bass Day Use Trail # 129 This trail is a 6.5 mile loop designed for use primarily by horse riders. The trail is also used by mountain bikes and dayhikers. Sections of Trail #129 are old two-track road; sections are 2’ wide to 6’ wide single-track. The trail and surrounding recreation area is closed to motorized trail use by the general public. There is a network of other single-track and two-track trails in the area. All are closed to use by the general public. There is a cattle allotment in part of the area with cows on the allotment from June 15 to July 15. There are irrigation ditches crossed by the trail. The rancher has permission to use an ATV. The contractor will be allowed motorized access to site locations only as described below. The expectation is that the contractor will minimize vehicle impacts by using only the minimum vehicle trips necessary. Vehicles will not be used if it is wet enough to leave permanent wheel ruts.

All site locations are identified by number on a map (See Exhibit #2, Work Area Map). Stations are measured in feet starting from the north end of the trailhead parking lot at the stock loading ramp and proceeding along the trail counterclockwise back to the west side of the same parking lot on Road 1316. Work site locations will be flagged and/or staked.

Site #1, Stations 2793 to 2903: Add gravel to the surface of 3 separate turnpikes. Compact the gravel. Crown the surface of the gravel in the center of the turnpike 2” higher than the timber retainers on either side. Turnpikes are 3’ wide and total 83’ long.

Access to site is 125’-235’ from the Larry Creek Road #1316. The first 23 foot-long turnpike is immediately before a bridge, the second 30 foot-long turnpike is between two bridges, the third 30 foot long turnpike is immediately after the second bridge. Contractor can use a power wheel barrel to deliver gravel from Road #1316. The bridges are too narrow for an ATV.

Payment item 915(02) (Contractor provides approximately 4 yards of 3/4” minus driveway gravel)

Site # 2, Station 4560: Reconstruct the culvert headwalls on a turnpike. Clean out the culvert. Clean out 20’ of lead off ditch to provide a 9”-wide bottom and a ditch bank slope of 1:2. Clean out 59’ of side ditch to provide a 9”-wide bottom and a ditch bank slope of 1:2. Remove any downed woody debris from above the ditches and dispose of debris outside of the clearance limits. Make sure culvert and all ditches flow properly. Re-crown the surface of the existing gravel on this turnpike which is 6’ wide by 102’. When finished the gravel in the center of the turnpike should be 2” higher than the gravel at the edges of the turnpike. The location of site 2 will be flagged.

Access is by way a two-tracked road at an intersection just to the south of the Larry Creek Group Camp. Drive down this road past dispersed campsites. The road and Trail #129 will soon merge. Continue a short distance and park off the side about 100’ before crossing Larry Creek. Larry Creek is approximately 685’ before Site #2. This section of trail north of Larry Creek is ATV width. Contractor can use an ATV or power wheel barrel to access this site. There is a crossing of an irrigation ditch that needs to be crossed with care to protect ditch bank integrity. There is a gate that may need to be closed if cattle are present.

Payment Item 915(02) (Contractor provides approximately 4 yards of 3/4” minus driveway gravel)

Site # 3, Station 5280: Repair and stabilize headwalls on a culvert. Clean out the culvert. Clean out 20’ of lead off ditch with a 9” wide bottom and a ditch bank slope of 1:2. Clean out 36’ of side ditch with a 9” wide bottom and a ditch bank slope of 1:2. Remove any downed woody debris from above the ditches and dispose of debris outside of the clearance limits. Make sure culvert and all ditches flow properly. Begin 50’ of tread fill by importing gravel 3’ W x 3”D x 50’ L, which will form a crowned surface.

Access is similar to Site #2. This site is approximately 1400’ from the crossing of Larry Creek. Contractor can use an ATV or power wheel barrel to access this site but not beyond this site.

Payment Item 915(02) (Contractor provides approximately 2 yards of 3/4” minus driveway gravel) NOTE: Sites #1- #3 involve similar types work on five sites, similar enough to be grouped and paid as a lump sum quantity.

Site #4, Stations 5489 – 5539: Install 2 treated log waterbars as marked on the ground approximately 50 and 100’ north of the hardened irrigation ditch crossing. Waterbars will be pinned with ½” X 18” rebar at either end and will be skewed at minimum 45 degrees to the centerline and the center of the waterbar will be centered on the trail tread.

Access to this site is similar to Site #3. Contractor can use an ATV or power wheel barrel as far as Site #3. From Site #3 carry the waterbars 200’ to Site #4.

Payment Item 922(05) (The government will supply 2 waterbars but not the rebar) Site #5, Stations 13981 to 15460: Install 6 treated log waterbars where staked on the ground. Waterbars will be pinned with ½” X 18” rebar at either end and will be skewed at minimum 45 degrees to the centerline and the center of the waterbar will be centered on the trail tread.

Access to the beginning of this site is approximately 0.6 mile from Road #1316 along a two-track road as shown on the Exhibit #2, Work Area Map. Contractor can use an ATV or pickup on this road but not on the single track trail beyond Station 13981. (Trail #129 and the two track road run concurrently for 1885’ up to Station 13981) Payment Item 922(05) (The government will supply 6 waterbars but not the rebar)

Site #6, Stations 16235 to 17575: Reinforce 4 existing rolling dips with a treated waterbar at locations staked on the ground (See Drawing 912-4(a). The log waterbar will be set flush or no more than 1” above the grade of each crown and pinned in place with ½” X 18” rebar at either end. The waterbar will be set as far uphill as possible on the uphill end of the crown where the rolling dip is the shallowest and is most likely to fail. Skew the waterbar to the same angle as the crown.

Access to the beginning of the site is approximately 0.6 mile from Road #1316 along a different two-tracked road as shown on the Exhibit #2, Work Area Map. Contractor can use an ATV or pickup on this road up to the highpoint at Station #17575 (at the NW corner of the Bass Day Use Trail were the trail turns sharply south). There is room to turn a vehicle around here. Tr #129 and this two-track road run concurrently for 1395’ up to Sta 17575.

Payment Item 912(06), Reinforced Rolling Dip. (The government will supply 4 waterbars but not the rebar)

Site #7, Stations 19504 to19964: Harden the downhill side/edge of 7 lead-off ditches. These lead off ditches are currently used in conjunction with rubber belted waterbars. Set the waterbars as staked or flagged at the site, butted to the end of the belted waterbar. Waterbars will be pinned with ½” X 18” rebar at either end.

Access is similar to site #6. Contractor can use an ATV or pickup as far as Station 17575. From 17575 an ATV can be used to transport waterbars to Station 19504. From 19504 to 19964 waterbars will have to be carried by hand to avoid further erosion at this site Payment Item 922(05) (The government will supply 7waterbars but not the rebar) Site #8, Stations 26516 to 27600: Reconstruct est. 150’ of tread to its original alignment at several locations where flagged and staked on the ground. See Drawings 912-1 and 912-2. Stakes will be offset uphill and marked with the centerline offset distance. Access is by foot down an auxiliary trail as shown on the Exhibit #2, Work Area Map. Payment Item 915(01)
