Glen Falls Trail Assessment Log, Pkg #12A Page 1
Trail Log –Glen Falls Trail, Nantahala National Forest
Base Bid Section : Glen Falls Trail Observation Platforms and trail work starting at the trailhead parking area, NC-106 (Sta. 0+00) and ending at observation platform #4 (Station 34+24). This section is a Class 4 hiking trail.
Optional Item Section: Starting at observation platform #4 (Station 34+24) and ending at the end of the trail at a parking area in Blue Valley area (Station 66+79).
Inspection Date: 2/19/2010 Inspector Name: Fred Lashley, Jody Maney, Bruce Lowe Length: 1.4 miles (including side trails) Trail Class: 3 & 4 Designed Use: hiking Managed Use: hiking Difficulty Level: moderate Average Width: 3’ Surface: Natural soils; gravel Wilderness Trail: No
This trail log illustrates items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the log is to give a description of the work, at a minimum; however it does not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item. Bidders must view the trail to assess full range of maintenance needs, access, and logistics of transporting imported materials. The Contractor shall maintain / improve the trail such that it conforms to current Forest Service standards. The primary goal of trail restoration is to establish positive drainage. Addition and restoration of grade dips are identified in the log at specific locations; however, it is expected that installation of more grade dips will be required, over and above what is called for here. A minimum of 50 grade dips per mile is required.
The Glen Falls trail runs from the trailhead off of NC-106 in Highlands to Blue Valley and drops about 700 feet of elevation over this distance. The trail utilizes numerous switchbacks and staircases to lose this elevation. Many of these structures need reworking and additional steps added in the steeper locations.
Switchback shortcuts need to be obliterated. Much of the side-hill trail is sloughing and needs to be re-dug upslope to its original location. Numerous roots will need to be removed. The last portion of the trail is along an old roadbed needing additional grade dips to remove water from the trail.
Where identified, replacement or installation of steps and crib walls should be rough-sawn 8”x8” pressure treated timbers per specifications.
