Trail Log – Falls Dam OHV trail, Uwharrie National Forest

Inspection Date : Jan. 4, 2010

Inspector Name: Eric Johnson, Bruce Lowe

Length: 2.8 miles

Trail Class: 3

Designed Use: OHV

Average Width: 6’

Surface: Eroded soil, rhyolite and red clay, rocky

The trail is easily accessible from two parking areas with ramps for loading OHV vehicles. The vehicles have caused some severe damage to the resource by digging out the tracks and leaving eroded trails often to bedrock. There are some steep areas that are more severely eroded. Grade dips are generally well located but may need some removal of silt or addition of fill/armor, in places, to make them effective. Most material for fill/armor must be imported, however there is some available on-site, within the trail corridor, by pulling in the overburden created from tires without disturbing or excavating below natural grade. Generally, armoring may require rip-rap or #4 RR ballast stone, some may require geotextile or geogrid; coordinate specific materials with Inspector. All fill material shall be well-compacted.

Most of the existing grade dips were cleaned and restored in March 2010. Therefore cleaning and restoration of existing grade dips will be minimal, in general. Review ALL existing grade dips and, if necessary, clean, grade to drain, remove any obstacles that prevent or block drainage at any point on the grade dip (pay close attention to the grade dip termination points, where brush, debris, soil, etc.

tend to accumulate. Assure complete drainage off trail into lead off ditches, ravines, etc.).

Trail Log – Rocky Mountain Loop OHV Trail, Uwharrie National Forest

Inspection Date : Jan. 4, 2010

Inspector Name: Eric Johnson, Bruce Lowe

Length: 2.8 miles

Trail Class: 3

Designed Use: OHV

Average Width: 6’

Surface: Eroded soil, rhyolite and red clay, rocky

The trail begins and ends at a parking area and looks to receive heavy use from OHV traffic. There is severe erosion in some locations, use outside of the established trail right of way creating additional resource damage. Importing material will be necessary to fill/armor in the extreme deep eroded tracks.

Trail abuse has caused the use of barricades such as highway guardrails that inhibit OHV’s from leaving the trail. Generally, armoring may require rip-rap or #4 RR ballast stone, some may require geotextile or geogrid; coordinate specific materials with inspector. All fill material shall be well-compacted.

Special Resource Protection areas, identified in the trail log and on the map, will require minimal work.

No ground-disturbing activities shall take place on these segments unless specifically approved by the COR. Also, any work deemed necessary within these segments will require armoring (e.g., placement of geo-grid on existing grade, covered with a minimum of 4 inches of #4 RR ballast) and must be coordinated with and approved by COR.

Segment 1: 1.9 miles trail maintenance, Station 0+00 to 98+06;

Segment 2: 0.2 miles trail relocation, Station 98+06 to 107+85

Trail Class: 3

Designed Use: Horse

Average Width: 2 ft.

Surface: wet soils, rocky

Wilderness Trail: No

The beginning of the trail is accessed from trails leading to it off the forest road. The trail itself is a user developed trail and follows along ridges, streams and roadside. The surface is mostly incised and needs must be re-graded with grade dip installation and out-sloping to establish positive drainage. It does not appear to have heavy use. There is a short section of relocation that is flagged at the end point of the trail runs parallel to the the road right of way.

Contractor is required to restore / rehabilitate all other access trails used as access to point of beginning of Todd Trail.
