Looking Glass Trail Assessment Log 1

Looking Glass Trail Assessment Log

Inspection Date : 11-25-09 Length of trail segment to be re-worked: 1.9 miles Trail Class: 3 Designed Use: Hiker/Pedestrian Managed Use: Hiker/Pedestrian Difficulty Level: More Average Width: 18-36” Surface: Soil, Bedrock Wilderness Trail: No

This trail log illustrates items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the log is to give a description of the work, at a minimum; however it does not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item. Bidders must view the trail to assess full range of maintenance needs, access, and logistics of transporting imported materials. The Contractor shall maintain / improve the trail such that it conforms to current Forest Service standards. The primary goal of trail restoration is to establish positive drainage. Addition and restoration of grade dips are identified in the log at specific locations; however, it is expected that installation of many more grade dips will be required, over and above what is called for here. A minimum of 50 grade dips per mile is required.

There are a variety of techniques available to accomplish the goal of establishing positive drainage. It is expected that the appropriate combinations of these techniques will be used to optimize trail maintenance for the long-term.

Suggestions of how positive drainage may be accomplished are given in the traiI log. It will be necessary to fill some areas with suitable, compacted material . Suitable material must be imported if adequate quantities are not made available within the existing, disturbed trail way (previously disturbed areas along the existing trail). All imported materials and materials harvested on-site are to be pre-approved by COR or inspector.

Many sections of trail have root and compaction problems. Sluff and burm are to be removed or reshaped to restore out-slope and re-establish positive drainage off trail. In many places tread needs to be restored up slope to original position. Extreme cases are noted in log. All short cut and social trails are to be closed and in some cases erosion problems are to be addressed, many of which are noted in log.

All materials are to be approved by inspector. Box Crib (BC) steps are to be constructed from 6x6 or 8x8 rough sawn pressure treated lumber or Locust and filled with compacted ½” minus aggregate. All locations noted as “Begin BC” indicate installation of box crib steps. Box crib may require timbers on 2, 3 or 4 sides to contain fill, depending on terrain, i.e. 2-sided BC (or L-crib) would be tied back to upslope.

Hard Times Trail Assessment Log Inspection Date : 11-12-09 Inspector Name: B.Lowe, D.Stutzman, F. Lashley, E. Johnson Length: 0.7 miles Trail Class: 3 Designed Use: Hiking, Bikes, Horseback Managed Use: Hiking, Bikes Difficulty Level: Easy Average Width: 3’ Surface: Soil Wilderness Trail: No

This trail log illustrates items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the log is to give a description of the work, at a minimum, however it does not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item.

There are a variety of techniques available to accomplish the goal of ‘establishing positive drainage’. It is expected that the appropriate combinations of these techniques will be used to optimize trail maintenance for the long-term. Trail shifts will not be permitted on Hard Times Trail. The Contractor must work within the existing trail corridor.

Suggestions of how positive drainage may be accomplished are given in the traiI-log. It will be necessary to fill some areas with suitable, compacted material (approved by COR) . Suitable material must be imported if adequate quantities are not made available within the existing, disturbed trail way (previously disturbed areas along the existing trail).

There will be opportunities to improve drainage by improving, enlarging, and adding multiple grade dips in the trail.

Johnson Length: 1.2 miles Trail Class: 3 Designed Use: Hiking, Bikes, Horseback Managed Use: Hiking, Bikes Difficulty Level: More Average Width: 3’ Surface: Multiple-soil, asphalt, boardwalk Wilderness Trail: No

This trail log illustrates items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the log is to give a description of the work, at a minimum, however it does not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item. The Contractor shall maintain / improve the trail such that it conforms to current Forest Service standards. The primary goal of trail restoration is to establish positive drainage. Suitable material must be imported if adequate quantities are not made available within the existing, disturbed trail way (previously disturbed areas along the existing trail).

From Station 31+50 to station 50+90, the area of disturbance along this trail is often quite wide (utility line corridor). There will be opportunities on this segment to improve drainage by constructing minor shifts with added grade dips in the trail. Techniques such as meandering, turning the trail, creating S-curves, increasing radii may be approved. Such shifts must be approved by the Inspector and/or COR.

The contractor shall flag proposed relocations.

Should portions of the original trail be abandoned under this relocation scenario, the Contractor shall rehabilitate the abandoned trail way by scarifying the tread, spreading leaf litter and organic materials to re-establish vegetation, installing check dams, etc., as necessary.
