Addendum 6 - Plantation Rd Bridge Inspection Report Summary
This is a Bridge Inspection Report prepared by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) District Three for Structure ID 197-5024-0, the Buck Creek Road bridge located in Marion County. The inspection was conducted on April 8, 2020, by Team Leader Jason T. Edwards and Assistant Justin Martin, with an earlier inspection performed on April 3, 2019. The bridge, originally constructed in 1960 using a Logan design, is a 208-foot structure consisting of 13 spans with 4 W12X27 steel beams per span supported by timber pile bents and concrete caps. The structure is scheduled for 12-month inspections due to deteriorating conditions at bent 9 and bent 13 piles. The bridge features a 4.5-inch reinforced concrete deck with multiple patches from 2007 pile replacement work, numerous leaking deck joints, and minor shrinkage cracking with moderate scaling. The superstructure earned a Good Condition rating (NBIS Code 7), while the substructure received a Poor Condition rating (NBIS Code 4) due to extensive decay in multiple timber piles, particularly at Bent 4 Pile 3, which exhibits significant rotten sections measuring up to 5 inches deep by 9.5 inches high, and at Bent 9 Pile 2 and Bent 13 Pile 1, which show reduced heartwood remaining.
The inspection documented multiple maintenance deficiencies requiring priority attention, including steel beam corrosion, concrete deck cracking, timber pile decay and section loss, and complete failure of all deck joint seals. The load rating analysis indicates the bridge is currently posted with restrictions and is not suitable for temporary shoring conditions given current load capacity limitations. Outstanding maintenance items include pile repair work at Bents 4, 9, and 13; sealing of all deck joints; cleaning and painting of bridge beams; and brush and tree cutting. This inspection report serves as supporting documentation for the Marion County Seven Bridges Maintenance & Repairs contract opportunity, which includes this Buck Creek/Plantation Road bridge (197-5024-0) among seven structures requiring comprehensive maintenance and repair work in Marion County, Georgia.
