About this file
This is a Bridge Inspection Report from the Georgia Department of Transportation, District Three, documenting the structural condition of the Mt. Carmen Road bridge (Structure ID: 197-5023-0) spanning Muckalee Creek Tributary in Marion County. The 96-foot by 29-foot bridge, built in 1960 using a Logan design, consists of a 4.5-inch reinforced concrete deck supported by six steel S10X25.4 beams and eight timber piles under concrete caps. The inspection, conducted on October 6, 2020, by Team Leader Jason T. Edwards and Assistant Justin Martin, reveals significant structural deficiencies requiring immediate attention. The deck maintains a good condition rating (NBIS Condition 7) with minor shrinkage cracking and failed joints, while the superstructure is rated as good condition (NBIS Condition 7) with corrosion on all steel elements that requires cleaning and painting. However, the substructure has been rated in imminent failure condition (NBIS Condition 1) due to advanced decay and section loss in the timber pile foundation, specifically Pile 4 at Bent 3 (7 inches wide by 15 inches high by 3 inches deep decay) and Pile 4 at Bent 5 (8 inches wide by 14 inches high by 4 inches deep rot with only 5 inches of center remaining). The bridge has been closed to all traffic since April 16, 2018, and remains properly closed as of the October 2020 inspection date.
Maintenance and repair activities identified in the inspection include bridge joint sealing of all deck joints (174 linear feet), painting of all bridge beams requiring steel protective coating (2,070 square feet), and pile repair and replacement at Bents 3 and 5 (specifically Piles 3-4 and 5-4). The inspection confirms that the structure requires closure due to section loss and rot of the timber substructure and notes that no specialized, fracture critical, or underwater inspections were performed. The report documents bearing data showing beam-on-cap connections across six spans with equal spacing of 16 feet and four beams per span. This inspection report supports the related Marion County Seven Bridges Maintenance & Repairs contract opportunity, which includes this bridge among seven total structures requiring maintenance and repair work to be completed in accordance with Georgia Department of Transportation Standard Specifications.
