About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for RFQ/RFP AA-2025-01 regarding Storage Ring ID Transition Chambers for the ALS-U project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The document addresses six technical questions about welding specifications, material requirements, and part numbers.

The clarifications focus on welding methods (laser beam welding, electron beam welding, and TIG brazing), with detailed explanations of abbreviations like "LBW-HV" and "TA-BRAZE." LBNL will provide Helicoflex seals and chain clamps to vendors, while vendors must produce the blanks. There is also a correction regarding line items 15, 16, 18, and 19, where drawing numbers in the RFQ did not match the Statement of Work - the SOW numbers are confirmed as accurate. The proposal due date is January 24, 2025.

Questions for Clarification

RFQ AA-2025-01

SR ID Transition Chambers for ALS-U

Question 1: On the drawing AL-1618-4236, there are sign of welding with the indication “LBW-HV” does it means that you want a laser beam welding under vacuum? Or do you request an “Electron-Beam Welding”?

Answer: We request laser beam welding that produces a high vacuum (HV) seal. This joint can also be electron beam welding. The vendor is also able to propose an alternative joining method that achieves the specified technical geometrical requirement

Question 2: On the same drawing, there is also a sign of welding with the indication “TA-BRAZE” Could you please explain what it means? (according to the weld representation used on this drawing, the process “TA braze” can be TIG welds and it can also be E-beam weld)

Answer: TA-Braze indicates Tig braze. This could also be touch braze using a suitable braze material.

Question 3: On the drawing AL-1613-4886, there is sign of welding with the indication “LASER WELD- HVD”. Do you request laser welding under vacuum or an Electron-beam welding ?

Answer: We request laser beam welding that produces a high vacuum (HV) seal. This joint can also be electron beam welding. The vendor is also able to propose an alternative joining method that achieves the specified technical geometrical requirement

Question 4: On the drawing AL-1575-1453, , there is sign of welding with the indication “TB” related to TIG welding. Could you please explain the meaning of “TB”?

Answer: TB indicates Tig braze. This could also be touch braze using a suitable braze material.

Question 5: Could you please confirm if the HELICOFLEX seals, clamp chains and the blank flanges will be provided by ALS? If not, could you please provide us with the HELICOFLEX references you are planning to use?

Answer: LBNL will provide the vendors with the Helicoflex seals and chain clamps. The vendors will need to produce the blanks. The exact quantity and variety of parts can be up for discussion.

Question 6: In “0. RFQ AA-2025-01”, Line Items 15 16 18 19 do not match the same IDs listed in Table 5- 5 of “AL-1671-8986A - STATEMENT OF WORK”
