About this file
This is a Northern Long-Eared Bat (NLEB) Presence/Absence Survey Report prepared by Stantec Consulting Services Inc. for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Highway Division for Project #613163 in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. The survey was conducted to determine the probable presence or absence of bat species in the project area where a rail trail is proposed to be constructed from Ford Avenue to Nichols Lane, including tree and vegetation removal activities. Acoustic detectors were deployed from June 4-9, 2025, across four kilometers of the project site using four full-spectrum acoustic bat detectors positioned at approximately 3 meters above ground level. The survey exceeded the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Guidelines' minimum requirement of 16 detector-nights by completing 24 acceptable detector-nights across six survey nights with suitable weather conditions. The survey determined that the Northern Long-Eared Bat was NOT CONFIRMED, with zero calls verified through manual vetting; however, three other bat species were detected and confirmed: the federally proposed endangered and state endangered tricolored bat (seven passes confirmed), the state endangered little brown bat (39 passes confirmed), and the state endangered eastern small-footed bat (six passes confirmed).
The survey was conducted by qualified biologists Laura Berube and JT Layne under the direction of Senior Project Manager Alex Pries, following the 2024 USFWS Range-wide Indiana Bat & Northern Long-Eared Bat Survey Guidelines and MassDOT's 2025 Bat Presence/Absence Acoustic Survey Protocol. Data processing was completed using Kaleidoscope Pro software with autoclassifier version 5.7.0, applying both automated classification and comprehensive visual vetting procedures for federally listed and state-listed species. The MassDOT Study Plan Form for Bat Surveys and Monitoring was provided to USFWS on May 14, 2025, with MassDOT instructing Stantec to proceed with the survey via telephone call when no response was received. The report includes detector deployment datasheets, biologist resumes, and file-level results compiled for compatibility with the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) dataset and USFWS Bat Reporting Spreadsheets.

INTRODUCTION
Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Project #613163 (Project) is the proposed construction of a rail trail along an existing railroad bed from Ford Avenue to Nichols Lane in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. Proposed work includes tree and vegetation removal where needed to aid construction activities, including trees that meet the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) definition of rare bat habitat suitability. MassDOT requested an acoustic survey to determine probable presence or absence of bat species and retained Stantec Consulting Services Inc. (Stantec) to conduct an acoustic bat survey for bats following the 2024 USFWS Range-wide Indiana Bat & Northern Long-eared Bat Survey Guidelines (USFWS Guidelines).1
Stantec followed USFWS Guidelines to evaluate presence or probable absence of state- and/or federally listed and other bat species. The federally endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) is included in the USFWS Guidelines, but is not thought to occur in this part of the state and was not included in the analysis.
Stantec provided the USFWS Study Plan Form for Bat Surveys and Monitoring to the USFWS on May 14, 2025, and did not receive a response from USFWS. MassDOT provided instructions to Stantec to proceed with the survey via telephone call. Stantec biologists used four acoustic detectors to complete an acoustic bat survey at the Project. This report is a summary of the acoustic bat survey findings and based on Stantec’s field survey efforts conducted in summer 2025.
METHODS
Stantec treated the Project as linear and, following USFWS Guidelines, deployed four full-spectrum acoustic bat detectors (Wildlife Acoustics SMMINI-BAT), one for each kilometer of the Project, each with an internal omnidirectional microphone oriented 45° (angled up) from the ground. Surveys targeted at least four nights with the following suitable weather conditions as specified in the USFWS Guidelines (during the first five hours past sunset): temperatures remain above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, wind speeds do not exceed 9 miles per hour for 30 minutes or more, and precipitation does not occur for 30 minutes or more.
Weather conditions were monitored at the nearby weather station: KMALYNNF11.2
Stantec programmed the detectors to record bat activity from 30 minutes before sunset until 30 minutes after sunrise as determined by the latitude and longitude of the site. Stantec programmed the detectors using default settings, including a 12-decibel gain, 256-kilohertz (kHz) sample rate, 16-kHz minimum trigger frequency, 3-second trigger window, and 15-second maximum file length. The detectors were powered by

Stantec deployed each detector on a temporary extendable pole at a height of approximately 3 meters above ground level per USFWS Guidelines (see detector datasheet in Attachment A for photos). The detectors were oriented to survey the Project where construction is proposed to occur (Figure 1).
Stantec processed data from all survey nights using Kaleidoscope Pro (Kpro) software (Version 5.7.0) using autoclassifier version 5.7.0 (S/A: -1) with the species set selected for Massachusetts, excluding Indiana bat, which is not known to occur in Essex County. According to USFWS Guidelines, a nightly maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of less than 0.05 indicates likely presence of a bat species and a nightly MLE equal to or greater than 0.05 indicates unlikely species presence (probable absence). Regardless of nightly MLE, Stantec completed qualitative analysis (visual vetting) of all files classified as a federally listed or candidate for federal listing species (i.e., northern long-eared bat [NLEB; Myotis septentrionalis] and tricolored bat [Perimyotis subflavus]). Visual vetting evaluated the accuracy of these species’ classifications by Kpro per recommendations outlined on the USFWS’s Automated Acoustic Bat ID Software Programs website.3 For detector-nights with files classified as federally listed or candidate for federal listing species, Stantec also visually vetted files containing pulses with a characteristic frequency ≥38 kHz to determine possible target species presence. In accordance with the provided 2025 MassDOT Protocol for Visual Vetting (2025 MassDOT Bat Detector Survey Guidance, and Report Documentation & Deliverables), Stantec also visually vetted files classified as state-listed species (i.e., little brown bat [Myotis lucifugus] and eastern small-footed bat [Myotis leibii]) using the following guidelines:
• If there are under 10 auto-classified calls of an individual state-listed species, manually review and confirm all calls.
• If there are between 11 and 100 auto-classified calls of an individual state-listed species, manually review at least 10 calls and until at least one call is confirmed.
• If there are more than 100 auto-classified calls of an individual species, manually review and confirm at least 10% of the calls and until at least one call is confirmed.
Visual vetting was conducted by biologists who are highly experienced in acoustic bat identification (Laura Berube and JT Layne). Resumes for qualified biologists are included in Attachment B. Determination of species presence each night for target species was based on visual vetting. Stantec also compiled file-level results from Kpro analysis, including visual vetting, to create electronic data compatible with the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) dataset and USFWS Bat Reporting Spreadsheets (electronic deliverable).

RESULTS
During the detector deployment, potential suitable bat roosting, traveling, drinking, and foraging habitat was documented in the vicinity of the detectors. Potential habitat surrounding the detector locations included forested habitat interspersed with residential land use and a golf course adjacent to the westernmost detector site (Detector 1; Attachment A).
Acoustic surveys occurred between the nights of June 4 and June 9, 2025 (Table 1). Stantec removed the detectors from the field after surveying for six nights, all of which consisted of suitable weather conditions, for a total of 24 acceptable detector-nights (exceeding the USFWS Guidelines’ minimum recommendation of 16 detector-nights). Kpro auto-classification determined significant nightly MLEs (MLE of <0.05) for big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis), hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), and silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans). Kpro auto-classified 126 files as northern long-eared bat, 27 files as tricolored bat, 349 files as little brown bat, 106 files as eastern small-footed, and determined a significant nightly MLE (MLE of <0.05) for each of these species (Table 1).
Visual vetting, per the 2025 MassDOT Protocol for Visual Vetting, concluded the probable presence of tricolored bat within seven files, little brown bat within 39 files, and eastern small-footed bat within six files (Table 1). The NLEB files were visually vetted and did not contain enough information for species-level determination or were produced by big brown bat or eastern red bat (Table 1). Examples of auto-classified files that were recorded at the detector sites during the acoustic survey and were visually vetted can be found in Attachment C.

CONCLUSIONS
The Project acoustic survey followed USFWS Guidelines using a linear survey approach. Visual vetting followed both the USFWS Guidelines and 2025 MassDOT Protocol for Visual Vetting. The acoustic survey resulted in the findings of probable absence of NLEB at the time of the survey and probable presence for tricolored bat, little brown bat, and eastern small-footed bat through visual vetting. The presence of big brown bat, eastern red bat, hoary bat, and silver-haired bat was also determined through auto-classification by Kpro. Data collected and analysis results from this survey are considered valid for five years.
