GSFC – Wallops (WFF) Overview
Utilities on center provide critical power, potable water, cooling, heating, fire protection, and sanitary needs, necessary to occupy the facilities and perform mission work.
4 Central Plants: (Potable Water, Wastewater, Emergency Power, and Propane)
• The Domestic Water system provides potable drinking water and water for the fire protection system.
• The Wastewater Plant treats wastewater for the entire facility.
• The Emergency Power system provides backup power to the Main Base, Mainland, and Island.
• The Propane Distribution system distributes propane throughout the Main Base for heating
Population – 1200 employees Site Area – 6580 acres Building Area – 1.13 M gsf Replacement Value - $1,215M
GSFC – WFF Utilities Statistics
• Potable Water - 35 miles of piping, seven wells, two potable water chlorination plants, two ground level water storage tanks, and four elevated water storage tanks.
• Wastewater Plant - Five lift stations, 28 miles of sanitary lines and a 300,000 gallon per day wastewater treatment plant.
• Electrical Distribution - 36 miles of power cables to buildings and site.
• Propane Distribution - 5 miles of polypropylene piping to buildings.
• Storm Drain - 15 miles of underground storm water conveyance.
• Power/Communications Duct Bank - 12 miles of underground concrete-encased conduits.
• Paving – 57 miles of paved roads, 21 miles of unpaved roadways, and 69 acres of parking lots.
• Energy Management Control System - 40,000 + points programmed for the control and monitoring of HVAC systems, plant alarms, sewage lift stations and electrical power.
• Chilled Water Distribution - HVAC systems at WFF are mostly decentralized, though a small underground chilled water piping system of less than 1 mile provides cooling and dehumidification for part of the E-area.
