Administrative Assistant II:

Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of 4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Responsible for performing daily office tasks such as filing, recording, maintaining records, copying, posting, and other similar duties, using a computer terminal, and other word processors. Follows organization and department procedures to complete tasks in a highly skilled and timely manner. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the technical field they support. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Aerospace Engineer I:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher in aerospace engineering or other engineering field, with a minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience working in science aircraft deployment, microgravity payloads, or spacecraft. This position is responsible for proposal development, concept of operations, orbital dynamics design and analysis, avionics and guidance, navigation, trajectory design, system trade studies, radiation analysis, mission design and operations, procedure development, logistics, and mission operations.

Aerospace Engineer II:

Requires all Aerospace Engineer I experience, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience working in a highly specialized aspect of aerospace engineering for space and aircraft missions. Specific job experience working in a mission environment may be required.

Aerospace Engineer III:

Requires all Aerospace Engineer II experience, with a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience working in a highly specialized aspect of aerospace engineering for space and aircraft missions. Specific job experience working in a mission environment may be required.

Aerospace Engineer IV:

Requires all Aerospace Engineer III experience, with a minimum of 20 years of experience working in the aerospace engineering field. Specific job experience in electrical systems may be required.

Aerospace Engineer Tech Lead: (Technical Lead) Requires all Aerospace Engineer III experience, with a minimum 15 years of relevant experience and is capable of leading teams of engineering and technical personnel. Recommends creative solutions to technical challenges faced by the team and ensures appropriate utilization of resources including reports of individual team members’ performance.

Aircraft Mechanic:

Requires an aircraft and power plant (A&P) license that certifies their training and fitness to work on airplanes, and a minimum of 5 years of experience working on aircraft comparable to

80ARC019R0003 PESS II Jb Att 1 the ones used by NASA and its research partners. An A&P Works on the airframe and engine sections of research aircraft. Maintains the aircraft so that it meets NASA and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards for safety. Performs routine maintenance and checks, repairs, and inspections of all critical areas of the plane’s external frame and internal engine workings.

Runs routine tests, make notes of test results, and repair or report all anomalies. Performs preventative, regularly scheduled, and unexpected maintenance on aircraft, service aircraft according to all required NASA and FAA regulations, document inspection and test results and maintain repair logs, and inspect aircraft integrity and perform post-maintenance tests. When directed, makes approved modifications to aircraft.

Configuration Manager:

Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of 5 years of experience providing project configuration and data management support for engineering projects. This position entails overall responsibility for project hardware, software, and documentation configuration identification, control, status and accounting, and verification. Oversees proposed changes to project documentation that may affect form, fit, function, cost, or schedule.

Establishes project data marking convention for configuration management and administers project level Configuration Change Requests to ensure compliance with project configuration management requirements. Serves as the primary interface between project personnel and the project’s Configuration Change Board, ensuring the proper input and processing of configuration changes, control, and distribution of all project generated and deliverable documents and drawings.

Database Administrator:

Responsible for the installation, configuration, upgrade, administration, monitoring and maintenance of databases used by missions. Includes the development and design of database strategies, monitoring and improving database performance and capacity, and planning for future expansion requirements. Requires knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) a general understanding of distributed computing architectures (for example, Client/Server, Internet/Intranet, Enterprise), a good understanding of the underlying operating system (e.g., Windows Server 2008, Solaris, Linux, AIX, etc) and knowledge of Oracle Database.

Electrical Engineer I:

This is an entry-level engineering position in electrical engineering. Requires a bachelor’s degree in the electrical engineering discipline and includes fresh-outs through 5 years of engineering experience. Responsible for designs for instrumentation, analog and digital sensors, embedded systems, control systems, small and large (facility) power systems, security systems, data acquisition systems, and communication systems. Also responsible for cryogenic systems detectors and system design, bio-telemetry sensor development, and laser and optics development. Designs for embedded systems include custom software and firmware development, custom hardware, data compression and storage development, electronics packaging, cable design and researching new applicable technologies.

Electrical Engineer II:

This is a journeyman level position that requires all Electrical Engineer I experience, as well as a a minimum of 5-10 years of experience working in the electrical engineering field. Specific job experience in electrical systems may be required.

Electrical Engineer III:

This position requires all Electrical Engineer II experience, as well as a minimum of 10 years of experience working in the electrical engineering field. Specific job experience in electrical systems may be required.

Electrical Engineer IV:

This position requires all Electrical Engineer III experience, as well as a minimum of 20 years of experience working in the electrical engineering field. Specific job experience in electrical systems may be required.

Electrical Engineer Group Lead:

Includes all Electrical Engineer III requirements except with 15 or more years of experience working in the electrical engineering field. As the lead of an electrical engineering team, this position may initiate new projects brought to the electrical engineering group from design or development teams. The lead will also work with the other engineers within his or her team to assess ongoing progress of existing projects. This typically also involves working with quality assurance teams, and the manager will usually be expected to report on progress and quality issues to other teams, as well as to senior executives.

Electrical Engineer Tech Lead: (Technical Lead) An Electrical Engineer with a minimum 15-years of relevant experience and who is capable of leading teams of engineering and technical personnel. Recommends creative solutions to technical challenges faced by the team and ensures appropriate utilization of resources including reports of individual team members’ performance.

Engineer Intern:

This is a training position for an undergraduate student in an engineering discipline or a related engineering field.

IT Security Expert:

Duties include performing research, collecting data, developing secure strategies and maximizing productivity. They are also are in charge of implementing security principles while following strict privacy policies. Information security analysts have at least 2-years of experience identifying security threats and other vulnerabilities. Conducts assessments of enterprise environments and frequently monitor logs and computer traffic. Knowledge of all aspects of Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) assessment, implementation, and compliance is required. Performs gap analysis to full life cycle support. Responsible for maintaining and updating FISMA security plans and developing agreements with mission partners.

Machine Maintenance Mechanic:

Requires a minimum of a high school diploma and 8 years of experience providing maintenance and repair support as specified herein. Familiarity with standard practices and procedures applicable to this field of activity is required. Maintains and repairs machinery, machine tools, and related shop equipment using hoists, hand tools, and power tools. Position also requires the maintenance and care of a few large ground communication antennas at Ames. Safe application, storage, and disposal of lubricants, cooling fluids, desiccants, and cleaning materials is required with good record keeping of equipment maintenance cycles and repair procedures. Position

Machinist:

Minimum high school diploma with at least 3 years of experience providing machine-operated manufacturing support required. Requires familiarity with standard practices and procedures applicable to this field of activity, including safe machine operation, proper machine maintenance, and measuring tool utilization. Fabricates steel, aluminum, and occasionally titanium and plastic parts through the application of machine tools, including lathes, mills, band saws, grinders, etc. References computerized part models and detail fabrication drawings to construct numerically-controlled component manufacturing programs and assist quality conformance. Supports component assembly through installation of helicoils, bushings, bearings, and other semi-permanent features. Utilizes gauges, micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments to confirm component geometry.

Machinist III:

Includes all Machinist requirements except with at least 10 or more years of work experience in this field. Specific job experience in machining fabrication techniques may be required.

Mechanical Engineer I:

This is an entry-level engineering position in mechanical engineering. Requires a bachelor’s degree in the mechanical engineering discipline and includes fresh-outs through 5 years of engineering experience. Responsible for all areas of mechanical engineering, including machine or system design, structural design and analysis, thermal design and analysis, and fluid mechanics (macro and micro). Work will require knowledge of mechanics, kinematics, materials selection, joint design, stress analysis techniques, drive systems (mechanical and electrical), heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and fabrication techniques. Communicates with other departments as needed for a given project for integration of mechanical, software, and systems; planning and performance of integration, verification and acceptance tests and creating reports to provide the relevant data to management. Other areas of responsibility may include helping to determine requirements for manufacturing equipment and working with a team to manage assigned portions of a project. Focuses on researching, creating, and improving products and devices.

Mechanical Engineer II:

This is a journeyman level position that requires all Mechanical Engineer I experience, as well as a minimum of 5-10 years of experience working in the mechanical engineering field. Specific job experience in mechanical systems may be required.

Mechanical Engineer III:

Mechanical Engineer IV:

This position requires all Mechanical Engineer III experience, with a minimum of 20 years of experience working in the mechanical engineering field. Specific job experience in mechanical systems may be required.

Metal Fabricator:

Position requires minimum of high school diploma and 3-5 years of work experience in this field. Performs prototype fabrication to determine performance characteristics and to check preliminary engineering designs using industry standard techniques. Accomplishes assembly, construction, installation, fabrication, maintenance, operation, repairs and modifications of research apparatus and test facilities. General fabrication skills required include precision sheet metal forming and fastening, various welding skills (e.g. shielded metal, gas metal, flux cored, and gas tungsten arc welding), oxygen fuel welding and cutting, super high-pressure water jet cutting, nonmetallic composite lay-ups and bonding, and wood construction for product fabrication fixtures or containment.

Metal Fabricator IV:

Includes all Metal Fabricator requirements except with at least an Associate’s Degree and a minimum of 10 or more years of work experience in this field, or a minimum of 20 years of relevant work experience.

Network Engineer:

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a related area and a minimum of 5 to 10 years of experience in the Information Technology (IT) field or in a related area. Responsible for service design, delivery, and operations for the Voice, Video, Cable Plant, and Local Area Network functions of the Ames Mission Network. Experience includes service design and delivery. Has a thorough understanding of network protocols, routing, and of commonly used network services –

Domain Name Systems (DNS), mail, web, etc. as well as less common network services.

Consults with users to identify current operating procedures and to clarify program objectives.

Expected to write documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, and corrections. Writes manual for users to describe installation and operating procedures. Familiar with relational databases and client-server concepts. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a supervisor or manager. May direct the effort of others.

Project Scheduler:

Requires formal training and at least 5 years of hands-on experience with the use of Microsoft Project scheduling software for organizing and coordinating all project Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) activities necessary to plan, develop, maintain and report on a project IMS. This includes integrating various detailed level component or Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) schedules into a single and comprehensive Project IMS that is inclusive of all project WBS elements. Experience developing and baselining a project IMS that encompasses the total approved technical scope of work, and accurately models the project team’s plan for implementation, consistent with, and correlating to, the project’s time phased cost plans is also required. The ability to perform schedule analysis, assessments and evaluation of variances to ensure consistency, accuracy, and timeliness of scheduling information across multiple organizations, contractors, vendors, and geographies performing work is required.

Systems Analyst I:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a computer science engineering related field, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working in the computer science field, or equivalent requisite experience. Strong Linux systems administration, troubleshooting, and diagnostic skills.

Knowledge of standard networking protocols and services (TCP/IP, NFS, HTTP, rsync) and ability to troubleshoot/diagnose networking issues. Experience designing, implementing, securing, and tuning Linux servers. Strong understanding of computer and network security and best practices across platforms. Must be able to independently lift 50 pounds, install and maintain server equipment in standard 7-foot tall racks. Specific job experience in computer science working in a mission environment may be required.

Systems Analyst II:

This position requires all Systems Analyst I experience, as well as a minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience working in the computer science field. Specific job experience in computer science working in a mission environment may be required.

Systems Analyst III:

This position requires all Systems Analyst II experience, as well as a a minimum of greater than 10 years of experience working relevant fields. Specific job experience in systems analysis may be required.

Systems Analyst IV:

Systems Analyst Tech Lead: (Technical Lead) A Senior Systems Analyst requires all Systems Analyst III experience, with a minimum 15 years of relevant experience and who is capable of leading teams of engineering and technical personnel. Recommends creative solutions to technical challenges faced by the team and ensures appropriate utilization of resources including reports of individual team members’ performance.

Summer Associates I, II, and III:

Temporary summer positions in a variety of technical disciplines covering a range of skills and experience. Can serve as a means to acquire critical skills or information for a brief period, or familiarize external entities with NASA missions and capabilities, or both. Candidates are typically graduate students or faculty from universities. Associate levels are determined on a case-by-case basis and depend on a combination of prior experience and work responsibilities.

Systems Engineer I:

This is an entry-level engineering position in systems engineering. It requires a bachelor’s degree in a related engineering discipline and includes fresh-outs through 5-years of engineering experience. Responsible for requirements definition, tracking, verification and validation of requirements, developing product and work breakdown structures, developing schedules, identifying and developing interface control documents, managing the technical effort, analyzing and managing risks, conducting design trade studies including recommendations for alternative concepts and approaches when necessary, creating test plans, test procedures and test reports, overseeing tests, performing life cycle cost analysis, and managing all technical documentation.

Systems Engineer II:

This is a journeyman level position that requires all Systems Engineer I experience, as well as a minimum of 5-10 years of experience working in the engineering related fields. Specific job experience in systems engineering may be required.

Systems Engineer III:

The Systems Engineers III is a senior position that requires all Systems Engineer II experience, with a minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience working in engineering fields related to systems engineering. Specific job experience in systems engineering may be required.

Lead a group of other engineers in technical projects. Analyze all parts of a system and make sure each component is acting as it should. Analyzes systems and delegates tasks to their team members. Must be able to understand all of the components of a system and how they interact with each other. Ensures the system parts work correctly together and to delegates to their team when and how something should be fixed to keep the system working smoothly. Often works with customers to analyze needs and determine how to design and develop a project. Experience in a leadership role is desirable.

Systems Engineer IV:

Systems Engineer Tech Lead: (Technical Lead) A Systems Engineer that has all the requirements of a Senior Systems Engineers III position, a minimum 15 years of relevant experience, and is capable of leading teams of engineering and technical personnel. Recommends creative solutions to technical challenges faced by the team and ensures appropriate utilization of resources including reports of individual team members’ performance.

Systems Integration and Test Engineer I:

This is an entry-level engineering position. It requires a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and includes fresh-outs through 5 years of engineering experience related to the operation and maintenance of an engineering test laboratory, and conducting hardware testing for aircraft, spacecraft and other complex systems. Works with computer software and hardware to integrate and test complex systems. Generally, they work with a dedicated team of technicians, test engineers, or researchers, to address any issues that might arise from the integration of subsystems in a given system or program. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to troubleshoot and self-start. System Integration and Test Engineers may perform regression, security, integration, quality assurance and stress/load tests. Specific certifications or security clearances may be required for certain tasks.

Systems Integrator II:

This journeyman level position requires all System Integration and Test Engineer I experience, as well as a bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience working in related engineering fields. Generally, they work with and/or oversees a dedicated team of technicians, test engineers or researchers, to address any issues that might arise from the integration of subsystems in a given system or program. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to troubleshoot, self-start and motivate their fellow team members. Specific job experience in systems integration, and certifications or security clearances may be required for certain tasks.

Systems Integrator III: (Senior) A Systems Integrator III is a senior position that requires all Systems Integrator II experience, with a minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience working in related engineering fields. Generally, they work with and/or oversee a dedicated team of test engineers or researchers, to address any issues that might arise from the integration of subsystems in a given system or program. Support the definition of the System Integration Test plans and ensures they are executable. Participates in the analysis of System Architecture Designs to address the system integration issues and specifies test cases. Performs and participates in peer documentation reviews (e.g. test plan, test specifications), and prepares the System Integration Test Reports. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to troubleshoot, self-start, who can work with minimal supervision, and motivate their fellow team members. Specific certifications or security clearances may be required for certain tasks.

Test Technician:

The Test Technician is a junior level position with that requires a high school diploma or its equivalent and either education or work experience of 2-5 years related to the operation and maintenance of an engineering test laboratory, and the conduct of hardware testing for aircraft, spacecraft or other systems. Helps perform key diagnostic and quality checks on test systems. On an average day, may respond to error messages, gather data for reports, and perform other routine quality-control tasks, depending on workplace needs. Physical labor may be required for installing testing hardware, measuring data, and light component-fabrication work. Core duties include running diagnostic tests and performing routine troubleshooting of system issues. May require the ability to interpret complex documents such as technical schematics and follow precise instructions well. Education required for this position varies; it may include an associate's degree in electronics, for example, or a bachelor's degree in engineering. Test technicians perform many of their tasks on their own, but they also need to be good communicators and work well with co-workers and the lead technician to ensure safety and product quality.

Test Engineer II:

The Test Engineer II is a mid-level journeyman position that requires all Test Technician experience with work experience of 5 or more years related to the operation and maintenance of an engineering test laboratory, and conducting hardware testing for aircraft, spacecraft and other systems. Test Engineer II positions are involved in creating and designing processes or experiments to test the performance and quality of a test article. A Test Engineer II mainly deal with the inner workings of hardware and software. Some independence is expected so the Test Engineer II must be able to work both on their own as well as with others as a team. Individuals in this position are responsible for reviewing the initial schematics and test plans.

A Test Engineer II needs to have good problem-solving skills and work well under stressful situations. Specific certifications or security clearances may be required for certain tasks.

Senior Test Engineer III:

The Senior Test Engineer III position requires all Test Engineer II experience, with a minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience working in fields related to testing engineering systems. Specific job experience in test engineering may be required. Test Engineers III often lead a group of technicians and occasionally other engineers in technical investigations. The primary job goal of the Test Engineer III is to ensure all components of a system undergoing testing are acting as they should. Some physical work in support of the experimental investigation may be required but these tasks are usually delegated to their supporting team members. The Test Engineer III must be able to understand all of the components of an experimental system being tested and how they interact with each other. It is up to the Test Engineer III to make sure the system parts work correctly together and to delegate to their team when and how something should be fixed to keep the system working smoothly. Senior test engineers often work with customers to analyze their needs and determine how to design and develop a test. Senior Test Engineers need to have good problem-solving skills, and work well under stressful situations. Specific certifications or security clearances may be required for certain tasks. Experience in a leadership role is desirable.

Technical Writer:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience working as a technical writer in the aerospace industry. Organizes material and completes writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.

Maintains records and files of work and revisions. Edits, standardizes, or makes changes to material prepared by others. Confers with customers to determine subject material to be developed for publication. Reviews published materials and recommends revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods of reproduction and binding. Selects photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material. Studies drawings, specifications, mockups, and product samples to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence and detail. Arranges for typing, duplication, and distribution of material. Must have good communication skills and be able to work effectively with engineers, technicians, scientists and project managers.

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs):

Engineers with typically a minimum 20 years of relevant experience and who, by virtue of education, training or experience exhibits the highest level of expertise in performing a specialized job, task or skill. Provides in-depth knowledge, subject matter expertise, and analysis of highly specialized applications and operational environments, high-level functional systems analysis, design, integration, documentation and implementation advice on exceptionally complex problems that need extensive knowledge of the subject matter for effective implementation.
